Winter Weather Weary Roof

Roof that needs snowguardsA roof already in disrepair can get worse during the winter. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles caused by temperature fluctuations lead to expansion and contraction of many building materials. This causes the roof to develop clear signs of wear and tear such as curling, cracking, and splitting. Before these problems get worse, the roof must be repaired or removed and replaced. Materials that are very sensitive to thermal instability react differently in bad weather and as such care should be taken to choose products that are not as sensitive to thermal fluctuations. DaVinci Roofscapes' slate and shake roofing materials are engineered to withstand freeze-thaw cycles.

Another common problem that home and commercial building owners face during the winter is the formation of ice dams. These sometimes beautiful, yet dangerous chunks of ice are formed when melted water re-freezes when it reaches the edge of the roof. This is primarily caused by the absence of heating at the edge of the roof as opposed to other areas where warmth from the attic is present. Roofs that have a low slopes and large overhangs are more susceptible to ice dam formation. Proper attic insulation and ventilation in the house are proven solutions that can be implemented to help prevent ice dams from forming on your roof and creating problems. You might also want to consider snowguards. This should be taken into consideration whether you have a cedar shake roof or use polymer roof tiles.

Additionally, thick ice is very difficult to remove and can cause damage to roof when attempts are made to crack it. While chemical de-icers are possible solutions, these can cause corrosion, discoloring and harmful exposure to some types of chemicals.

Often I receive calls from architects looking for profiles on projects similar to what they are working on. Most recently I was asked if I had any profiles for DaVinci Slate or Shake on a restaurant (sure do), located on a golf course (yes), where the golf course is located at a university (hmmm). I did get stumped there, but hopefully we will have a profile of that project soon!

If something like this would be helpful to you or your client, you can view these project profiles on our website sorted by recent projects, residential, commercial, educational, religious and historic. You can also Like DaVinci on Facebook and get updates as these profiles are released.

McRay Roofing and Construction out of Oklahoma City knows a thing or two about nasty weather and storm damage. So when they had a client with a tri-laminate roof damaged in a hail storm last year, showing them a Class 4 Impact Rated roof was a no brainer. The homeowner loved the texture of the Valoré Slate roof tiles and chose Slate Black. They installed some copper valleys, copper vent pipes and other copper details and the look was complete. When asked how the roof turned out Jeff McRay, president of McRay Roofing and Construction responded, "It came out beautiful! Here at McRay Roofing & Construction we are just as passionate about bringing out as much beauty to the roof as we are performance and the ability to withstand the Oklahoma weather. DaVinci makes that process a whole lot easier!"

What Color Roof is Best for Our Home?

What color is the best for our home? The house is sage green with cream trim and pepper corn black shutters.

Tanya
Douglasville, GA

*********************************************************************************************************************************************************

Hello Tanya,

You have a nice home that I think will be even nicer with a roof tile that makes a statement. I am recommending the DaVinci Bellaforté shake tiles. They will blend beautifully with the style of your home and your setting. The Bellaforté has a natural look to the texture that will add an extra element of design that you do not have with your current shingles.

As for the color I looked at several. My first thought was the Harbor Gray and while it would look just fine I think a slightly darker color would be a bit better. I have made two suggestions depending on what you like.

If you like gray consider the Slate Gray or a blend that is predominately that color. If you like a warmer tones, I would suggest Abruzzo. It leans more brown but would still work with your black shutters. While you don't say the brand I believe the peppercorn black is a brownish black more than a true black and if so that would be perfect with the Abruzzo. Either of these directions will work well with your current sage green main color and just about any color you might decide to go with in the future.

Your customer care person will be able to provide samples and additional guidance. I hope that helps to get you started. I'd love to see pictures of your finished roof.

Sincerely,

Kate Smith

Tips for Shaking Up Your Home’s Exterior with Color

$

From Theresa Clement, Designer/Contractor and Host of MyFixitUpLife Radio Show:

If you’re eager to add a splash of color to your home’s exterior, but don’t know where to start, here are some tips to help you dress up your home exterior.

Select a color you love and then paint a bench, your door knocker or flower planters in that color. Live with the ‘burst of color’ outside your home for awhile before adding it permanently to your house. Then, when you’re comfortable, go ahead and use that color --- or shades of the hue --- to paint your front door, shutters and trim to make a lasting impression.

A great way to gain color inspiration and ideas is to participate in the ‘Shake it Up Exterior Color Contest’ that’s now offered online until April 21, 2013. Just ‘Like’ the DaVinci Facebook page and submit a digital picture of your home’s exterior along with up to 250-words describing how you want to ‘shake up’ the exterior of your home with colorful products. Open to homeowners nationwide, the “Shake it Up” Exterior Color Contest includes a $5,000 cash grand prize to help the winner add color to the exterior of his or her home.

This contest can inspire you, the homeowner, to think ‘outside the box’ for adding color to your home. There are timeless color combinations --- like blues with shades of grays and white for homes --- but that doesn’t mean you can’t add a pumpkin orange front door to the same house. Color makes a home come alive and allows your personal style to shine through on your home!

Here are some easy tips to add color to the outside of your home:

Color Tip #1– Use movable potted plants to add “pops” of color on your porch, steps and walkway to help frame your home in a different color. Consider gaining your color inspiration from your garden, so that your entire yard “flows with color” right up to your front door.

Color Tip #2– Add colorful pillows and outside rugs to furnishings and porch areas.

Color Tip #3– Splurge on colorful accessories for your exterior like garden flags, door mats, metal wall art, decorative wreaths and door knockers.

Color Tip #4– Replace your house numbers in a new font and color so they boldly stand out on your home.

Color Tip #5– Update the color of lighting sconces or overhead lighting on and around your home’s exterior.

5 Reasons To Use My Favorite Color On Your Exterior

$

When people find out what I do for a living it seems only natural for them to eventually ask me what my favorite color is. Over the years I've noticed that people's expectations of my answer fall into two camps. Some of the people asking have a curiosity and lean a bit towards thinking that if a color is my favorite then it somehow must be a special color. Other times it seems that people think that if I reveal my favorite color it is akin to a mother revealing her favorite child.

So what color is my favorite?  "Favorite for what? My favorite color for my car is different from my favorite for my living room and neither of those are my favorite color for a sweater." This might seem like I've learned to side-step the question when really it is the truth. However, if I'm pressed to name one overall favorite it would be any in the blue-green color family, from the lightest tones of aqua to the deepest, most mysterious teals. It seems that being born on the cusp of Aquarius (the waterbear) and Pisces (the fish) predestined me to have a natural affinity for this watery hue.

Teal is a color that doesn’t immediately pop to mind for most homeowner’s when they are considering an exterior color but it is one I think works well in so many different regions, styles and with a homes constructed of a variety of materials. Not convinced? Let me show you some examples that illustrate the five reasons you should consider teal when selecting your exterior color.

Traditional Exterior by Cincinnati ArchitectRWA Architects

1. A shade of teal can play beautifully off of the tones in many patterns of natural stone and slate. Even if an exterior isn't all stone, using this color will enhance the stone that accents the home.

Traditional Exterior by Chicago PhotographerCynthia Lynn Photography

2. Teal and most shades of blue-green complement a wide range of neutrals. So regardless of whether your home is stucco, stone, natural shake or painted in a neutral, teal might just become your home's best color friend.

3. Teal doesn't just love neutrals, it also shares its color love with brick. This is an excellent choice to complement brick and on this home redefines red, white and blue.

Traditional Exterior by Seattle General ContractorChristopher Templeton

4. Teal plays well with others. Here a color similar to Valspar's Ocean is just as at home with a color like Valspar's Deep Green and Pomegranate as it was with neutrals.

Eclectic Exterior by Merritt Island Interior DesignerIsland Paint and Decorating

5. Even though, as you can see, it works well with so many styles of homes, it is still and sophisticated choice that can give your home a unique personality.

Bellaforté Shake Abruzzo, DaVinci Shake Weathered Gray and even
DaVinci Multi-Width Slate in Weathered Green can find a partner in teal

This is a color that can work with both warm and cool colors. See how it blends so naturally with the DaVinci colors? Can you see why this versatile color is my favorite and how it might work for your home? I hope so because if you win $5K in the Shake It Up contest it may just be one of the colors I recommend. It is my favorite after all!

Severe Weather Season is Starting… Is Your Roof Ready?

$

Severe weather can come with many unpleasant surprises.  Heavy snow, rainfall, hail, falling branches and intense winds are just some of the challenges home and commercial building owners face. The roof is the most susceptible part of a structure to these forces. Having your roof properly installed can help ensure proper functioning during inclement weather. To make sure your roof is always in good working order you must have a clear maintenance plan, inspect before and after harsh weather, and make the necessary repairs at quickly as possible. Repairs should be done by a professional roofer contractor that can guide you about the applied loads on your roof and any other factor to take into consideration.

If your roof has been badly damaged before a storm, spot repairs may not always be effective and can result in the roof needing to be completely replaced. Gutters and drains should also be carefully inspected to accurately analyze their capacity and effectiveness in removing water and ice away from the roof. You run the risk of water building up on the roof during bad weather when this is not addressed. This can lead to internal leaks, added discomfort, and costly repairs.

When selecting materials for your roof, be sure to research options that are both durable and low maintenance to help you minimize potential damage from severe weather. As well, many people opt for green roofing options. DaVinci offers a proprietary product that is green, sturdy and beautiful. The Class 4 Impact Rating and Class A Fire Rating of our products set them apart in the industry. Our products also withstand severe freeze-thaw cycles without showing signs of wear and tear. Simply put, we make products that will get your roof ready for severe weather.

Tips to Make Bellaforté Installation Even Easier!

$
0
0

Over the past 3 years of working with Bellaforté and inspecting various installations I have observed the following common mistakes.

  • Starters installed without a gap: There must be a gap between the starters. While 3/8" is optimal, 1/4" to 1/2" is fine. I constantly see installations where the starters are installed "tight" or without a gap.

  • Transition tiles not used: Transition tiles must be used at all metal transition points or where courses need to be adjusted. These can be tiles that are modified on site or purchased specifically from DaVinci. When transition tiles are not used, and the ledge remains on the back of the tiles at these transitions, the underlying materials will cause tiles to appear lifted.

  • Incorrect alignment of underlying tiles: The self aligning ledge must lie correctly along the top of underlying tiles. Installers must insure that the tiles are lying correctly. If this is not watched, unsightly gaps and or broken tabs can result.

As well, this video offers some great installation tips and techniques.

By following these tips, your installation will be much easier and look great!

Uh Oh! I Found a Leak! Now What?

$

Melting snow, hail and rain might uncover a leak you never knew existed. In some situations, a roof patch can quickly remedy the situation, but this is not always a solution for severe leaks. Severe leaks can be a sign of a cedar shake alternativebadly damaged roof that cannot be repaired but must be replaced. These types of leaks can be caused by weathering of material, high impact forces, and natural catastrophes. They are not always detected immediately and more often surface during or right after a storm.

DaVinci Roofscapes offers versatile alternatives to materials like asphalt, natural shake and slate tiles. Our slates and shakes require very little maintenance and can withstand high impact from hail and heavy winds (up to 110mph). As well, our tiles come with a 50-year warranty giving you peace of mind.

With 49 colors and multiple color blends, finding the best polymer roofing option for your home has never been easier. Plus, the freeze-thaw cycles during the year won’t compromise the mechanical and thermal stability of our tiles.

Not sure where to start? We will help you find a qualified contractor that knows how to install our green roof systems. No special equipment is needed and you’ll quickly discover that problem areas are all gone and your roof is giving you the protection you need.

Tips for Shaking Up Your Home’s Exterior with Color

Designer/contractor Theresa Clement offers tips on adding color accents to the exterior of the home this springtime. Her first recommendation is to start small.

“Select a color you love and then paint a bench, your door knocker or flower planters in that color,” says Clement, co-host of MyFixitUpLife home improvement radio show. “Live with the ‘burst of color’ outside your home for awhile before adding it permanently to your house. Then, when you’re comfortable, go ahead and use that color --- or shades of the hue --- to paint your front door, shutters and trim to make a lasting impression.”

Clement, who starts every project with a design theme, color and texture palette, encourages homeowners to personalize their home with color. “A great way to gain color inspiration and ideas is to participate in the ‘Shake it Up Exterior Color Contest’ that’s now offered online until April 21, 2013,” says Clement. “Just ‘Like’ the DaVinci Facebook page and submit a digital picture of your home’s exterior along with up to 250-words describing how you want to ‘shake up’ the exterior of your home with colorful products.”

Open to homeowners nationwide, the “Shake it Up” Exterior Color Contest includes a $5,000 cash grand prize to help the winner add color to the exterior of his or her home.

National color expert Kate Smith of Sensational Color will help judge the contest to determine five finalists. She will then work with a professional artist to create renderings and product wish lists of how the five finalists can transform their home’s exteriors by adding both color and colorful products by the contest sponsor and partners.

The original photo submission and the artist’s renderings for the five finalists will be posted on the contest site from May 13 – 26, 2013 for online public voting. The finalist with the most votes will receive the $5,000 cash grand prize.

“This contest can inspire homeowners to think ‘outside the box’ for adding color to their homes,” says Clement. “There are timeless color combinations --- like blues with shades of grays and white for homes --- but that doesn’t mean you can’t add a pumpkin orange front door to the same house. Color makes a home come alive and allows your personal style to shine through on your home!”

For fast and easy tips on ways to add color to the outside the home, Clement offers these ideas:

New Trend for HOAs - Polymer Shake!

$

DaVinci ShakeNatural shakes roofs are very popular but unfortunately are highly flammable. While the use of fire-retardant materials can reduce their flammability, weathering eventually causes these fire retardants to become less effective. The result is a highly flammable roof that can easily catch fire just from the presence of embers. A growing trend is the required replacement of wood roofs. Recently many Home Owners Associations (HOAs), cities and counties have started to require the replacement of wooden roofs with materials that are approved for the area by certain dates or home and business owners alike could face penalties.

One example of this is the deadline is that homeowners in Boulder, Colorado are facing. By January 1, 2014, all Boulder homes are required to replace all types of wooden roofs with materials that carry a high fire rating (meaning they are more resistant to fire). As well, residents living in San Bernadino County California Fire Safety Zones are also faced with a similar deadline (July 1, 2014) to replace all wooden roofs and have been inquiring about replacing their wood roofs with our polymer tiles.

DaVinci Roofscapes is a leader in polymer roofing. Our shake tiles, while they look like natural wood, are not made of wood at all and are approved by a wide range of HOAs. You can upgrade your roof with our polymer shakes without worrying about the setbacks of natural wood. Our products last longer than wood and require very little maintenance. With our products’ fade resistant properties, you can enjoy the look of your polymer roof tiles for many years to come.

Worried that you will need to choose a different color once you remove your natural roof? Don’t worry, we have a wide range of color selections to choose from and we also cater to custom blends to suit your project needs This makes it easy to preserve the look of your home without even knowing that you have a new roof.

Hello,

Here is our home. We are in need of a new roof and are looking for an "old world"  type of look and feel. We are very interested in your roofing tiles and would appreciate your suggestion as to which of your products/colors would look best on our home.

Also, is there anywhere in South Orange County, CA where we can view your product? Or, a list of homes we can see?

Thank you!
Judy Crowley
South Orange County, CA
Product: Shake

*****************************************************************************************************************************************

Hello Mrs. Crowley,

Your home is very lovely and I think that topping it with a of the DaVinci roof will be just perfect.

I am giving you two choices to consider. I like both equally and they are similar so it will just depend on which look you prefer.

The Bellaforté Abruzzo color looks like a good choice and the shape and texture of the tiles will give you the Old World feel you are after. Alternately, the DaVinci Multi-Width Shake tile in standard blend Tahoe would give you more distinct variation in the color from tile to tile, albeit still subtle. This is still an Old World feel just a bit more refined in the shape and texture of the tiles. Both compliment your stonework, which is a nice feature of you home.

These are my two favorites however you are lucky because you home could work with any of the warm tone brown tiles in either shake or slate.

I hope that helps you to feel confident in your decision. I'd enjoy seeing the final look and what you decided on if you have a moment to send a picture.

Sincerely,

Kate Smith

Help Your Roof Survive Spring Storms with DaVinci Slate or Shake - Class 4 Impact Ratings

Spring storms are known to wreak havoc on many homes and commercial buildings in the United States. However, your roof may be spared if you have a DaVinci Roofscapes polymer tiles that offer a Class 4 Impact Rating.  Our lightweight roofing systems meet this specification and can help ensure that the service life of your roof goes way beyond just a few years while guaranteeing your safety.

With the revolutionary impact rating system developed by Underwriter Laboratories (UL), you can have peace of mind during spring storms or hail storms. UL uses what is known as the UL 2218 standard to classify the impact resistance of roofing materials. A class rating of 1 to 4 is assigned, with 1 being the lowest and 4 being the highest. Roofing materials that are classified with a Class 4 Impact Rating have the greatest impact resistance and are less likely to become damaged from impact.

The type of roof you install may also affect your insurance premiums if you live in a state where roof damage from spring storms or hail is common. How much you can save will depend on your insurance provider. Whether you are considering re-roofing or are in the process of building your home, choosing the right type of roofing material can save you from future headaches. With DaVinci slate and shake green roofing materials, you just might keep your insurance expenses down while ensuring you roof is safe.

DaVinci EcoBlend® Roof Meets LEED Requirements on The North Face®

$

If you visit The North Face® retail store in Victor, N.Y., check out the roof and how the builders created the new store to fit into the natural setting of the area.

The North Face, which specializes in performance apparel, equipment and footwear, opened its 7,870-square-foot retail facility on a wooded lot in November of 2012. During the construction process every effort was made to meet historic ordinances and comply with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification process.

To top off the rough-hewn timber and stone siding structure, The North Face team members worked with general contractor Genesee Construction Services and landlord/developer Historic High Point Retail, LLC to choose DaVinci EcoBlend Multi-Width Shake tiles that reflect sunlight and heat away from the building. Recommended by Upstate Roofing & Painting, the polymer shake roof tiles provide higher emissivity and reflectivity rates, which lead to greater reductions in the cooling load for the structure. This helps increase energy efficiency for the building.

“Natural cedar shakes simply could not meet the LEED requirements for this project,” says Dave Pastore, CEO of Upstate Roofing & Painting in Rochester, N.Y. “Wood cedar shakes can cup and curl due to moisture absorption. They need constant attention and inspection, and they’re a high-maintenance product.

“We specifically recommended DaVinci polymer shakes for this project because the company uses a higher number of shingle widths than other manufacturers. Multiple widths add to greater authenticity of the roof. DaVinci also pre-sorts their colors prior to shipping, so we don’t have to do this in the field, saving us on installation time.”

Upstate Roofing & Painting has installed DaVinci roofing on other projects in the Rochester area in the past. Each time the company meets with strong approval from their clients. “The DaVinci product has an engineered rib structure,” says Pastore. “For our clients this translates into a better performing and easier to install roof.”

For this project, a custom blend of the polymer shake roofing tiles was created that includes an equal percentage of Light Gray, Light Weathered Gray, Medium Weathered Gray, Medium Dark Weathered Gray and Dark Weathered Gray tiles. The DaVinci EcoBlend products have also earned the designation as an ENERGY STAR® Qualified Product.
