From the Architect's Corner - Free Online Continuing Education for Architects

Have you ever wondered what a color expert would tell you if you asked the question, "What order should I go in when selecting exterior colors for my home?"

According to Kate Smith, DaVinci Roofscapes' color expert, the correct order is roof, siding, windows, front door, trim then garage door. Unless the home is brick or stone, the largest fixed feature is probably the roof, so you will want to start there.

It's going to happen. That cedar shake roof will need to be replaced soon. Maybe not today, but now is a great time to start thinking about what type of roof you want to put on after your cedar shakes have fully discolored, split and withered up. So what is on your want list? Something that will maintain it's color? Maybe you want an environmentally friendly roof (i.e. - no trees harmed). Or perhaps something that will last longer than 15 years and won't fall apart every time there is a hail storm or a strong gust of wind? Maybe something made in the USA? We can provide all of these things, plus at a price point that is comparable to a new, natural cedar shake roof.

These homeowners in Woodstock, IL did it. They chose Bellaforté Shake in the Verona color blend to replace their shake roof, giving their entire home a face lift in the process. Contact us today to learn more about Bellaforté Shake, which boasts a Class A Fire Rating, Class 4 Impact Rating and 110 mph wind certification.

History of Snow Guards

0
0

If you think snow guards are a new idea, then think again.

Some folks believe different forms of snow guards have been in place for more than 300 years. Consider stones and logs that were placed on roofs ages ago in high-snow areas like the Alps. They were put hauled up to the roofs and left on top to help increase friction and retention of the snow ... and probably to help keep the roof on during high winds!

"Modern" snow guards started back in 1897 when Dr. M. Halliday invented and started selling snow guards for slate tile roofs and slanting roofs in New York City. One of his company's first snow guard installation projects was on the historic Bellevue Hospital, which still stands today.

Regardless of how old snow guards are or where they were created, they're very much a part of our roofing lives, both in the United States and in Europe. Designed to break up falling snow as it melts and prevent "avalanches" of snow from sliding off roofs, snow guards come in many forms.

Pictured here are a variety of snow guards currently being used throughout Europe. You'll see everything from a line of metal "teeth" on the roof to the entire roof saturated with snow guards.

Whether you live in an older home in Germany or a modern home in Colorado, the experts at DaVinci Roofscapes recommend you remember that snow guards are essential for helping create a safe roofing situation. For more details see Q & A Guide to Snow Guards and What Are Snowguards and Why Are They Necessary?

DaVinci Roofscapes WINNER Share Her Experience

What does it feel like to win a new luxury roof from DaVinci Roofscapes? Ask Lois Phelps of Ashkum, Illinois. Last year she won one of two major Bellaforté polymer roofing prizes in the2013 Great TOH Giveaway sponsored by This Old House magazine.

"I can't think of a suitable word to describe how surprised I was to be a winner of a DaVinci roof," says Phelps. "I rarely enter contests of any sort and to win a new shake alternative roof of DaVinci quality was not anything I ever envisioned happening."

After consulting with color expert Kate Smith, Phelps chose the Tuscano blend of four autumn shades for her Bellaforté Shake roof prize. "This color is perfect!" says Phelps. "I looked at the DaVinci custom colors and the Tuscano synthetic shake shingles were still my favorite."

Since her roof was installed, Phelps has become a mini-celebrity in her area. "This is a small community so many people stopped and watched the composite shake shingles being put on," says Phelps. "There have been nothing but positive comments. I'm stopped in other communities (the latest at a farmer's market!) and asked about my new shake tile roof.

"The entire process from the moment I was sent the message that I had won one of the DaVinci prizes through the completion of the installation has been a wonderful experience. My contractor said that installing the Bellaforté roof was like putting a puzzle together and something he enjoyed.

"Best of all, this past weekend our area was hit with a destructive storm with 60-70 mph winds and hail. My new designer roof weathered the storm just fine!"

Want your chance to win a free DaVinci synthetic shake or slate alternative roof? The 2014 Great TOH Giveaway is now underway! Click HERE to enter for your chance to win one of THREE new Bellaforté lightweight roofing systems for your home.

For the Love of Slate!

Love the look of slate on a roof, but concerned with the weight and breakage factors? Then you're a smart homeowner!

For centuries heavy slate has been used for a variety of construction purposes (including slate roofs). The breakability of slate (both for the cleavage and grain) makes it possible to split slate into sheets. Marry up the durability and availability of slate and you've got a product with a winning look. But, it's still heavy and can break when you don't want it to.

Enter the age of man-made products. This is a time when lumber decking has been replaced by composite boards and low-maintenance vinyl siding now substitutes for real wood siding. The great news is that the same advances have been made for slate.

Synthetic slate roof shingles manufactured by DaVinci Roofscapes perfectly mimic real slate, but with far more advantages than the natural product. Lightweight and easy to install, imitation slate tiles are used every day to create luxury roofs across America. From individual homes to condominiums to hotels to schools, the advantages of fake slate roofing tiles have made composite slate a preferred product for builders, remodelers, roofers and architects.

When selecting a DaVinci slate alternative roof, you're investing in a roof that comes with an impressive 50-year warranty --- plus it resists impact, fire and high winds. (See Check Out Polymer Slate Roofing Options) This manufactured slate roofing product is also an economical choice, costing approximately one-half the installed cost of natural slate.

To make your life easier --- and your home or project more beautiful --- DaVinci offers the option of single-width and multi-width simulated slate roofing alternatives. Made from state-of-the-art engineered polymers, our durable products come in 49 standard colors and a wide variety of color blends. So, no matter what kind of slate roof you're looking for, you're bound to fall in love with DaVinci sustainable roofing products.

Impact-Resistant DaVinci Roof Selected for Oklahoma City Country Club

The motto of Mallard Construction says it all ... "because Oklahoma weather happens." And, as everyone knows, that weather can include strong winds and hail a good portion of the year. That's the number one reason that Concert Golf Partners went searching for a new designer roof for their clubhouse right after they acquired Gaillardia Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City earlier this year.

"The new owners wanted 600 squares of a Class 4 impact-resistant roof system to replace the concrete tiles on their 15-year old country club," says Andy Lacks, vice president of commercial roofing with Mallard Construction out of Oklahoma City, Okla. "Concert Golf Partners expressed an interest to us in finding a durable lightweight roofing system that would fit the high-end neighborhood surrounding the Gaillardia Country Club while withstanding severe weather.

"We've installed the DaVinci Roofscapes product before in several Oklahoma locations with great success. So, our confident recommendation was the Bellaforté Slate Black impact-resistant tiles for this job. We love this product because every time we've installed Bellaforté it quickly becomes a centerpiece roof in a community and almost always results in creating several referrals for our company."

The elegant 55,000-square foot, three-level clubhouse at Gaillardia Country Club has a French Normandy design style and features state-of-the-art meeting rooms, a fitness center, a wine room and an extensive learning center.

Bellaforte Slate

"The clubhouse was opened the same year we started our family-owned business and the same year DaVinci Roofscapes was launched," says Lacks, a member of the DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor program. "Coincidence? I don't think so. Instead, I think it's a trifecta of excellence that has come together in a unique way."

Please HELP with Color and Style...

Color. Home is currently in framing stage. We are using a used / antique brick (see pic), and probably a whitish trim. Need help with style AND Color.

Thank you,

Jeff Bouldin

*****************************************************************************************************************************************

Dear Mr. Bouldin,

Without knowing anything about the style of your home, I can only give you some insight into the color and type of roofing that generally will work well with this style of brick.

The antique brick appears to work with either a gray-based or brown-based roofing tile. It will also work well with either slate or shake style tiles depending on which you prefer on your home.

Of the four options I am showing, I prefer the slate gray. It offers a nice contrast to the bricks, is a classic choice and would go with any style of home. Slate black could also be a good choice but in the strong sunlight of Texas may be too strong a contrast and too dark in general.

A cooler and lighter medium & dark gray would be another choice that is classic but may not work as well as the other choices if all of the other permanent elements on the home lean warm.

The Mountain blend shake would be my choice if you wanted to go brown rather than gray. It goes well with the brick and is more neutral than some of the other brown-based tiles that are more chocolate brown and would not read as well with the brick.

You might find it helpful to download my two FRESH Color For Your Home's Exterior ebooks. The steps given can help you to coordinate all of the elements of your exterior from roof tiles and brick to paint and trim.

Best of luck in selecting the perfect colors for your new home. I hope this information is helpful in the process.

Sincerely,

Kate Smith

Building Code Basics

0

The arrival of Hurricane Arthur on the East Coast over July 4th weekend shines the spotlight once again on building codes and the need for advanced polymer roofing products. As is the case in most situations, those coastal area properties constructed to meet the high standards of the Miami-Dade County codes fared better than those built to lower standards. Fortunately, more and more coastal areas are adopting those strict standards.

According to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), building codes are needed to establish "predictable and consistent minimum standards that are applied to the quality and durability of construction materials."

At DaVinci Roofscapes, we take building codes seriously --- as should you. In general, codes are put in place and enforced to ensure the safety and health of building occupants. In the long run, stronger codes can be extremely cost-effective because of their enhanced safety and performance features.

Because we want our composite slate and synthetic shake roofing tiles to meet the strictest of building codes, we've made sure they pass the Miami-Dade County codes (click HERE).

Specifically, the DaVinci Slate roofing tiles we have created passed the Miami Dade County, Florida NOA No 06-308.03 test. These durable imitation slate roofs have also passed the following tests:

- passed the ASTM D 471 water absorption test

- passed the ASTM G21 Fungus (algae) test with no algae growth

- passed the ASTM D 638 tensile strength test with no meaningful reduction of strength on long-term weathering of material strength

If you're using our DaVinci Shake products, you'll find these cedar shake alternatives:

- are rated Class A for fire retardance in the Fire Test UL 790 with a VersaShield underlayment and Class C with an approved synthetic underlayment.

- passed Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) qualifications

- passed Miami Dade County, Florida NOA No 07-1203.03

Homeowners Want Durable Roofs

0
0

Results of a nationwide consumer study, conducted by Harris Interactive©, show that 88 percent of the respondents indicate that the durability of a roofing product will have “a lot of influence” on the product they select when it comes time to purchase a new roof.

In the 2011 DaVinci Roofscapes’ Homeowners Exterior Preferences Study, more than 1,000 homeowners overwhelmingly indicated that durability and longevity were the two key aspects that will influence the type of roof they purchase for their homes in the future.

“Extreme weather events have increased in frequency and severity in the past decade and that has changed the way people think about their roofs,” says Ray Rosewall, CEO and president of DaVinci Roofscapes. “Damaging winds and hail are increasing in frequency and severity and are now occurring in almost every state. With the dramatic weather changes we’ve experienced recently it’s no wonder homeowners name durability as their number one influencer when considering the purchase of a new roof.”

When do homeowners plan to replace their roofs and what influences that decision? In the same study, 65 percent of homeowners indicated they would be prompted to replace their roof if it became damaged from severe weather. (See Weather Concerns Top-of-Mind with Homeowners When Making Plans to Replace Roof) Another 23 percent reported that their current roof is old and will soon need to be replaced, with an additional 13 percent indicating that their roof is near the end of its warranty and needs to be replaced.

Top 10 Influencers

Homeowners ranked the following factors as having “a lot of influence” in the decision-making process for the type of new roof to purchase:

  • 88 percent – Durability

  • 83 percent – Longevity/Built to Last

  • 72 percent – Low/No Maintenance

  • 71 percent – Resistant to Severe Weather

  • 69 percent – Has a Warranty

  • 57 percent – Fire Resistancy

  • 55 percent – Material Roof is Made Out of

  • 50 percent – Price

  • 41 percent – Colors Available

  • 24 percent – Complements the Neighborhood Setting

“Everyone is cost conscious but it’s interesting to see that homeowners are putting more value on the inherent quality and durability of the alternatives when looking at the cost of a new roof,” says Rosewall. “We believe this truly reflects the thought process of the homeowner that a roof is an investment in their home, and as such, they will get more value from a quality roof versus a lower cost bargain-basement priced roof.

“Every feature rated by homeowners on this top 10 list of roofing purchase influencers is available in our polymer shake and synthetic slate roofing tiles. With a 50-year roof, DaVinci designer roof tiles are a solid investment in an easy-care luxury roof that’s built to last and give the homeowner peace-of-mind.”

Nothing Says Elegance Like an English Garden

0

Your house has style and grace complete with beautiful turrets. Your yard looks more blah than beauty. Why not infuse a romantic English Garden love into your outdoor space?

A proper English Garden has only a few simple elements that can create a timeless outdoor space where an American iced coffee or a spot of tea would be equally welcome. Creating this look you may wish to start by taking notes from the perfect English Garden topper a Turret covered in DaVinci Roofscapes' slate. Nothing hints back to English days of yore stronger than a turret. Slate grays complement both light and dark tones on the home and create a stunning starting point for your outdoor space.

Elements of English Garden Style- Topiary and Turrets

Elements of an English Garden

Begin your garden with a focus on all that is green. Neatly trimmed hedges or shrubs can give way to creating intimate vignettes in your yard. Curves become elegant or even whimsical with a few added tall topiaries. Square hedges can create ‘rooms’ for beautifully selected furniture. Allow the green to be lush and speak volumes in your space.

Surrounding your perfectly manicured hedges is often raised flower beds. This is where you will want to infuse your pops of soft or bold color. Roses, hydrangeas or other fragrant perennials would be perfect in this space. Color rules for an English garden are generally to keep things in one of two ways:

The first option is to create flower beds that contain one color in various shades of that color family. Various reds to pinks or vibrant purples to light orchids would be perfect in an English garden. Vined or high growing plants are typically used to create visual interest in your garden.

Second, if you are looking for more color variation in your garden you can select bold hues in opposing colors. A hot red rose mixed with a vivid yellow pansy would be stunning. Do not mix in too many selections, just 2 or 3 for interest so your garden appears well thought out, not haphazard.

For added visual interest you may choose to add archways, seating spots or gazebos to your English Garden. Anything that can grow a vine plant would absolutely be lovely and carry through your color scheme with height.

English Garden Design with Rustic Bench

Furniture in the English Garden is always kept stark in white or wood. The garden should be the color-focus here, not the furniture. Stick with clean lines or a few aged rustic wood pieces to keep things authentic. For privacy fences select pieces that will melt into the background like black iron or darker wood.

Textures and accessories in this style should be kept to the minimum. The one exception to this is pottery. You can incorporate whites, pinks and lighter colored planting pots filled with lush greenery to enhance your garden.

Designing an English Garden to go with your Euro-Classical designed home will begin a vast array of options incorporating beautiful colors that become wonderful jumping off points for your outdoor design plan. Focus on the style, décor and combination of hues up top to create beautiful patios and porticos all throughout your outdoor spaces.

Troubled Shake Shingle Bridge Over Calm Waters

One of the most famous sites in Switzerland is the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne. This 204-metre long covered wooden bridge was constructed in 1333 to defend against any attack that might come from nearby Lake Lucerne.

In 1993 fire destroyed the bridge, but locals quickly had it rebuilt because of its prominence in the city. What a shame that almost 20 years ago the reconstruction couldn't include a synthetic cedar shake roof.

While picturesque, the natural cedar shake roof on the bridge is covered with algae and heavy winter storms have taken a toll on the bridge. Perhaps when it's time to replace the cedar roof shingles the Swiss will consider Multi-Width Shake roofing tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes.

Created to accurately resemble shake tile roofs, the DaVinci synthetic shake roofing product comes in six different natural color blends and resists algae, insects, moisture and mold. The hand-split composite shake roofing tiles from DaVinci are carefully crafted to guarantee a sustainable roofing product.

Polymer ShakeThe multiple widths (4-, 6-, 7-, 8- and 9-inches) of the fake cedar shake help create a more natural, non-repeating appearance that can be laid in a straight or staggered pattern. And, both wavy and straight grains are blended throughout for an authentic look.

Backed by a 50-year limited warranty, DaVinci shake alternative roofing tiles are impact and wind resistant. Plus, they have a Class A fire rating ... which would give this bridge with a fiery history peace-of-mind for the future.

What Color for Our Mansard Roof?

0
0

Hello Kate,

My husband, Ron and I met with Royce last week and said you could maybe help us with picking out the colors that would look best for the mansard roof. We were looking at Brownstone and Castle but one seems too brown and the other too gray.

Thanks for your help,

Kathleen
Sea Girt, NJ
Product: DaVinci Multi-Width Slate tiles

*******************************************************************************************************************************************

Hello Kathleen,

I can see why you might think gray is the best choice. If you are set on that direction, a warm gray or medium weathered gray could be a good choice with your bricks (it leans more warm brown than cool blue).

Brownstone would also work or one or two of the colors from brownstone. Just keep the pattern that is created by multi-colors within a blend minimal so that it doesn't compete with the pattern of the brick.

Single-width slate will give a uniform look like you have now but multi-width will work too and give an entirely new look for the roof.

I think the colors on the siding and trim seems a bit too light and bright for the overall tone of the brick and roof options. Select a neutral that blends with your roof color and is more toned down (grayed). This might just be the lighting in the photo but my advice would be to have your siding color be the value (lightness or darkness) of your brick. That does not mean the same color just that when you stand back the main siding shouldn't seem too much lighter or brighter than the brick. For the trim, a lighter or darker version of the same color will work nicely. Keep the garage doors the color of the siding rather than the trim.

I hope that helps with selecting the right color roofing tiles.

Sincerely,

Kate Smith

Help Deter Wildfire Spread with DaVinci Class A Fire Rated Polymer Roof Tiles

0
0

From coast-to-coast, the number "1" is very important when it comes to wildfires. All it takes is one lightning strike, one smoldering ember from a campfire, or one dropped cigarette to spark disastrous results --- especially in several drought-stricken states.

On July 1st, the National Interagency Fire Center issued their report that several key areas of the country will have above normal wildland fire potential through the summer months. Areas include portions of California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Idaho. And, there's potential for this "above normal" classification to expand to New England states in August.

Why are we sharing this scary weather prediction? Because DaVinci Roofscapes polymer roofing tiles are Class A fire rated with the proper underlayments. That's important to know --- especially if you install roofs in the geographic areas listed above.

As you might imagine, choosing "A" rated lightweight roofing systems is smarter to selecting a "B" or "C" rating on your roofing products. And, in some locations, an A rating is required by local codes.

Having attained a Class A fire rating means our composite shake and synthetic slate tiles have attained the best fire rating that is available in the market. It also means that our composite roofing products meet the following criteria:

  • Intermittent Flame - an assembly of tiles is subjected to an intense flame with a strong air current for two minutes then turned off for two minutes. This procedure is repeated 15 times. After the final flame cycle the air current is continued and the assembly observed for an additional hour to look for failure.

  • Spread of Flame -  flame and air current are applied for 10 consecutive minutes and then observed until the flame deck recedes. Once the flame deck recedes the assembly is checked for maximum spread of flame.

  • Burning Brand - a burning brand is placed on an assembly of roofing tiles with a high volume of wind behind it. The decking of the assembly is constantly monitored for 90 minutes to see if any fire burns through.  If fire burns through the roof deck anytime during the 90 minute trial, the tiles fail.

Roof Quilts... Or Just Beautiful Slate Roofs?

A recent trip to Europe resulted in more pictures of roofing patterns and colors than of historical landmarks.

Everywhere one turns in Germany, Switzerland, France and other countries, you see unique slate roofs with a variety of colors and patterns. These vivid building toppers enhance the character and charm of old city structures.

At DaVinci Roofscapes, we specialize in color on the roof. With 49 standard colors to choose from (and an unlimited number of custom colors we can create!) our polymer roofing products are ideal for creating a roof quilt or special pattern.

One location in the United States that has creatively used DaVinci imitation slate tiles to re-create a one-of-a-kind designer roof is the chapel at the Dayton Veterans Administration Medical Center in Ohio. (see The Chapel At Dayton Veterans' Administration Medical Center).

Twenty-seven squares of medium tan synthetic slate roof tile and 67 squares of slate black tiles were used to create a large cross design with a star-studded border on the chapel roof. Once completed, the two sides of the roof (plus the steeples and vestibules) were once again the showpiece of the campus.

DaVinci Roofscapes Celebrates National Curb Appeal Month

0
0

Can your roof affect the resale value and curb appeal of your home? Absolutely. That's why DaVinci Roofscapes is celebrating National Curb Appeal Month in August!

"The roof plays a major role in creating curb appeal because it can be up to 30 percent of what you see as you approach a home," says Kate Smith, president of Sensational Color. "Homeowners should make a conscious effort to blend the color of their synthetic roofing material with other elements of the home exterior to create an overall cohesive look."

How important is curb appeal to homeowners? More than three-quarters of U.S. homeowners (78 percent) report that their home’s curb appeal is either “extremely” or “very” important to them.

According to the 2011 DaVinci Roofscapes’ Homeowners Exterior Preferences Study conducted online by Harris Interactive©, 61 percent of homeowners say that when house hunting or designing their home, the most attention-grabbing exterior feature was the style of the home, followed by how the house looked on the property (43 percent).

And, when it comes to adding curb appeal to a home, color counts. Fifty-nine percent of homeowners place a lot of emphasis on the role that color plays when they think about replacing major exterior home features. Color availability is so important to homeowners that a majority of them (54 percent) are influenced to buy a specific brand of product based on the color options available from that brand.

“This study shows us clearly that color influences homeowners’ buying patterns and decision processes when it comes to exterior home features,” says Smith. “People want their home to be appealing from the street and they’re looking for colorful key products --- such as the roof, door, trim, siding and windows --- that will help them create the impression they wish to convey on their home.” (For more tips, see The Most Important Factor In Creating Curb Appeal)

National Curb Appeal Month has been launched by Fypon starting in August of 2014 and you can start adding to YOUR curb appeal by downloading the FREE COLOR GUIDES from Sensational Color and DaVinci Roofscapes!
