Featured Project - Frankfort, IL

Our Sales Support Representatives talk with contractors everyday about the orders they are about to place. Sometimes the homes they discuss have turrets, and with that some questions pop up mainly, "how do we do that?" The answer is, you can do a couple of things.

1. You can order Multi-Width Slate bundles (even if the rest of the roof is Single-Width or Bellaforté, we can make sure the colors match) for the lower and middle sections of the cone. As you move up, you will need to cut the tiles to fit. As you reach the cap, we have 4" accessory tiles that will fit the top part of the turret. If you need some support while on the jobsite, we encourage you to reach out to one of our Technical Services Managers for assistance and advice.

2. If you are looking for a fool proof option, we offer custom turret packages. Send us a diagram of your turret and we will design a package to fit. Included in the package are pre-cut tiles, numbered bundles and a custom layout design which eliminates a lot of time and effort in the field for the installers.

DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor Program Member Owen Enterprises Inc., located in Lombard, IL recently installed this roof located in Frankfort, IL. On the main part of the roof they used Single-Width (12") synthetic slate roof shingles. On the turret, Multi-Width tiles were used and cut to fit the design of the cone.

Need Color Ideas for My Home

I have 30 sq. house and would be interested in color ideas.

Nathan Buerge
Joplin, MO
Product: Slate

*****************************************************************************************************************************************

Hello Mr. Buerge,

I have looked at the images of your home and have the following recommendations for the color and style of your roof.

Your home has lovely details and many materials that add to its stately style. You will not want to detract from these by adding a distinct pattern to the roof. Allow eye to move to the pattern in your brick, stone and the timbers by choosing a roofing material with a the natural look of subtle color variations.

It appears in your pictures that your home is trimmed in black or a very deep charcoal gray. This works well with the style of your home as well as the colors in the brick. Keeping the roof in either Slate Black VariBlend or Slate Gray VariBlend is what I would recommend.

For the profile I think the Bellaforté Slate would be the way to go. The larger tiles and uniform pattern fit the style and size of your home very well and I think you will be pleased with the results.

Sincerely,

Kate Smith

Polymer Roofing Caps Off Mixed Texture Home

$

After almost a quarter of a century with cedar shake shingles overhead, the Butler family decided to "shake up" their roof. Rather than simply replace their cedar shake roofing, the homeowners opted for a combination of metal and composite shake tiles on their roof to complement the brick, cedar and copper textures on the home's exterior.

Faux Shake ShinglesThe Butlers chose a DaVinci Roofscapes Multi-Width Shake roof in a Mountain blend of three brown tones of color for the top of their designer roof with an aging artisan metal secondary roof underneath and capping off dormer windows. The home's siding features both real cedar and brick accents, and the gutters and garage doors are made of copper.

"With each rain and wind storm we were losing pieces of our original wood shingles from the roof," says Kim Butler, of Brock, Nebraska. "We started searching online for long-lasting roofs and discovered the polymer shake tiles from DaVinci. At the same time we remembered the appeal of steel roofs we'd seen in Montana. Somehow we knew we wanted to combine the two products.

"We really like how metals patina with age to give a rustic look. With a steel roof and copper gutters, we believe the slow progression of the patinas will bring long-term beauty and durability to our home. Add in the DaVinci composite shakes and we have a winning combination."

Tips for Creating a Textured Exterior

For homeowners wishing to mix textures on the home exterior, national color expert Kate Smith recommends following the FRESH approach.

"Start by looking at the fixed features of the home --- such as the foundation material, chimney structure or walkways --- to determine the basic common color or color cast that will link all your materials together," says Smith, president of Sensational Color. "Next, look for commonalities in the regional colors for your home and the environment near your home.

Fake Shake"The Butlers did this perfectly. They were able to bring together so many different textures and colors seamlessly because they took into consideration the whole house and the surroundings while they stayed within one color family. From the dark window frames to the roughhewn cedar shutters to the smooth metal roofing, the style of their home beautifully lends itself to the use of multiple textures."

When choosing metal accents for the home, Smith reminds homeowners to take into consideration the aging process.

"As copper develops a patina it does so in stages," says Smith. "The initial patina is a rust color that generally turns a deeper brown within the first five years. After that it begins to slowly take on a light greenish tone (known as verdi gris) after 15 years. Each stage has a unique character and will work together beautifully with the other materials on the home, such as the siding and polymer shake roof."

Your Guide To Lighting Up Your Home Exterior For The Holidays

$

Christmas lights are popping up all over the Internet as quickly as they are beginning to appear in neighborhoods across the country. If like me, you have yet to put up the first light, here are some tips to get both of us started.

A fantasy holiday color scheme (picture from totalenvironmentinc.com)

More Choices Than White or Bright Colors

With the introduction of LED bulbs your holiday lighting is no longer limited to warm white or bright colored lights. Today there are more color choices and combinations than ever before. Mix up light and dark green. Bring together pastels and brights. Update traditional red and green by adding pink and light green. Even a combination of warm white and cool white with amber or faint blue can create a special winter wonderland look.

Just like when you are picking colors for your exterior, selecting the right colors for your holiday decor starts with considering a few things about your home. Your color scheme can be inspired by your lifestyle, style of your home or even be influenced by your neighborhood.

If you have kids multi-colored lights and plastic reindeer might be what gives them the most delight. White lights or a single soft color can be best if your goal is to highlight your home's architectural details, landscaping or other outside elements. Sometimes neighbors collaborate to turn their entire street or cul-de-sac into an attention getting display. Whatever color scheme you choose, make it your own.

An elegant display in white (picture from outdoorlightingnashville.com)

LEDs Light The Way

Once you've got a design in mind, if you will be purchasing new lights -- go with LEDs. The cost of LEDs is more initially but they use less than 15 percent of the electricity of traditional lights. They also don’t break as easily. In the past LEDs had a bluish glow that most people found less appealing than the warm yellowish glow of incandescent lights. However, the color of LED lights has really been perfected and considering net costs are the way to go for outdoor decor.

Landscape Lighting

As you are getting your design direction in mind, don't forget to extend your lighting to your entry, walkways, edges of flower beds and driveway. Focusing lights on the architectural details of your home highlight your home’s beauty and adds to the festive atmosphere. If you are doing quite a bit of lighting I recommend that you consult a lighting professional. They will help you to avoid ending up with a tangle of wires and extension cords that might not stand up well to the weather or could be too much for your electrical system.

Add Lush Greenery

No one wants to see the cords and plugs so take this tip fromSouthern Living on how to disguise unsightly wires. Keep the cords or extension cords for strings of lights out of sight by winding them around a column or post and cover with Christmas greenery or garland. Add a pretty container of ornamental cabbage or kale at the base.

Let Someone Else Do The Decorating

Companies offer turnkey services that remove the hassle of purchasing, installing, maintaining and storing exterior decorations. They can also give you a unique design or ideas for installing the lighting. During the holiday season, they will service the lighting should anything become damaged or stop working. One of my favorite reasons for hiring someone else to handle you exterior decor is that they take down the display and place the items in their own facilities for the next year.

If you want to have their holiday lighting up and running by the day after Thanksgiving it is best to book early. I don't know about you but I really don't like putting up decorations when it is freezing outside and I have many other holiday chores to attend to. Get on it right now and mark your calendar for next year right so you remember to book your dates for decorating right after Labor Day.

So go get started planning the perfect display for you and your family. The possibilities for holiday lighting are endless. The only limitation is your imagination.

Homeowner "Lucky" to Have Roof Hail Damage

$

Lucky. That's how Sally and her husband Mike feel about softball-sized hail totally destroying their asphalt shingle roof.

"Our roof was just seven years old with a 50-year warranty," says Sally, a Kansas homeowner. "After a severe storm, our roofer and insurance adjuster assessed the damage. Both concluded that, in addition to the hail damage, our roof had faulty asphalt shingles and didn't hold up to the Midwest summer heat. They appeared to be cracking along horizontal lines across large expanses of the roof.

"We happened to be very lucky that the hail storm totaled our roof, because clearly it wasn't going to last the promised 50 years!"

To get a 50 year roof that would truly hold up, Sally and Mike turned to DaVinci Roofscapes. "Upon researching these polymer roof tiles we were very excited about the longevity of the composite slate, energy savings, design of the simulated slate roofing that allows for air circulation, the authentic look of the imitation slate roofing and its resistance to hail, fire and high winds," says Sally. "We also get a reduction on our insurance premium because we selected this best-in-class roof!"

For the designer roof on their historic revival Queen Anne Victorian home, Sally and Mike selected a combination of Bellaforté Slate and DaVinci Multi-Width Slate in a custom blend of both Mountain VairBlend and Mountain.

"Our home is just seven years old, but it's built to resemble a turn-of-the-century home," says Sally. "The DaVinci synthetic slate shingles now on the roof add to the beauty of our home and we can count on this composite roofing to truly last through 50 years of Midwest weather!"

From The Architect's Corner - Retro Fit Snow Guards

$

0

In the installation instructions for our slate and shake composite roofing material we (strongly) recommend that you specify snow guards on projects in areas where snowfall occurs. We understand that sometimes snow guards get overlooked or cut from a project, especially in the warm summer months when winter seems pretty far away. Throughout the fall I field a lot of calls inquiring about post installation snow retention, and luckily most snow guard manufacturers make a retro fit system that can be installed on our previously installed lightweight roofing systems. The easiest way to figure out how to do this is to contact the snow guard manufacturer directly and get their advice on how to get started. If your roofer needs technical assistance on how to remove tiles in order to install the retro fit system, contact us and we will be happy to give advice.

Happy Friday, Architects!

Need Help Finding Alternative to All Black Roof...

Hi:

I've asked Crystal to come up with some alternatives to an all-black roof.

Thanks - Bob

Bob Gibb
Calgary, Alberta

**********************************************************************************************************************************************

Hi Bob,

A black roof could certainly work on your home but I can understand why you would prefer something a little different to set your home apart. I would still recommend that you stay in the black/gray range of colors but there are other options.

I think Slate Gray could be a nice choice in Multi-Width Slate. The color would blend nicely with your brick and shake as well as pick up on the black trim around the windows and on your door.

Another gray such as combination of Dark and Medium Gray could also work. I like the warmer/brown gray tones slightly better than the cooler/bluish grays based on the photos. Look at the samples of the colors outside your home to determine which color will look best.

Once you decide on your roof gray, I would suggest changing the blue paint on the stairs and porch to a gray that blends with the roof color to give the exterior a cohesive look.

You have a lovely home and I hope this helps you to pick the perfect roof color.

Sincerely,

Kate Smith

Snow Guard Tips for Engineered Polymer Roofing

$

If you get something in your eye that needs attention, you don't go to a general doctor --- you go to an eye doctor. Why? Because an optometrist is a specialist in eye care.

Similarly, if you're installing polymer roofing in snow-prone areas, it's best to consult a specialist on the type of snow guards that will work best for your luxury roof project. The knowledgeable team at Rocky Mountain Snow Guards have great insights on the variety of shapes, sizes, colors and styles of snow guards that work best when installed with synthetic roofing material.

Here are some of their tips:

- Homes with "slippery" roofing materials (such as metal or synthetic roofing material) greatly benefit from having snow guards installed since they are designed to stop avalanches from taking place and thus protecting areas that are located under the roof (such as patio furniture, plants, cars, toys, porches, gutters and people).

- Whether you refer to them as snow guards, snow cleats, snow brackets, snow jacks or snow pads, these helpful roof items are design to reduce snow movement and control the rate of melting snow. When doing their job correctly, they should help break down the roof's snow mass into smaller and safer sections.

- The quantity and pattern of snow guard installation on a fake slate roof should match the specific needs of the roof to provide the most uniform system of snow retention possible. The strength of a snow guard is only one factor in controlling rooftop snow. Snow guards must be installed in a high enough density and in the right pattern to keep the snow in place. Click HERE to use a free Snow Guard Calculator. Always have your roofing contractor include the snowguards and their installation in their quote.

- Snow guards can be made of many materials ... from copper to Kynar-coated aluminum to steel. Research the type of product that will work best in your area before making a purchase.

November 19th is "American Made Matters Day" ... and at DaVinci Roofscapes we're honored to celebrate this special occasion.

For 15 years our synthetic roofing material has been made in Kansas. Every composite shake and plastic slate tile we've ever manufactured has been proudly "Made in the U.S.A."

Not only has DaVinci succeeded with it's Made in America philosophy, but the company has grown. Just this year we've moved to a larger facility we now own in Lenexa, Kansas. The new space allows us to have more capacity to produce our composite roofing products and expand as the company continues to grow.

"We're extremely proud that all of our lightweight roofing materials are made in the United States and that we support our economy by providing jobs for hard working folks around the country," says Rosewall. "We're part of the multiplier effect because our 'Made in America' commitment also means we purchase from suppliers located only in the United States. So, with every designer roof tile we sell, we're helping our economy to expand in many, many ways."

Since 1999, the experienced team members at DaVinci develops and manufactures industry-leading composite slate and shake roofing systems with an authentic look and superior performance. Backed by a 50 year roof limited warranty, DaVinci eco friendly roof systems are 100 percent recyclable. (See Return Those DaVinci Scraps!)

From the Architect's Corner: Can You Tell the Difference?

For the last 15 years we have made it our mission to make the most authentic polymer slate and shake composite roofing tiles on the market. You know you've succeeded when time and time again you send homeowners, contractors, and architects out to see the products installed on a nearby home or business and their response is, "I drove right by it! It looked like natural slate and I was looking for a plastic slate." Or when you're standing in a tradeshow booth and people absentmindedly stop and touch the material, and end up blown away because it didn't feel like the slate or wood they were expecting to feel.

I recently received this picture from a member of our DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor Program (Featured Project to come!) and had to share. With the copper gutters and flashings, these Multi-Width Slate tiles in the European Blend have the authentic look that people seeking a roof in our category require. If you were driving by and saw this roof, what would you think?

Help in Colorado... Maybe a Custom Blend for Our Polymer Roof?

$

We would like assistance choosing our colors using the Bellaforté Slate.

We have a red brick georgian house - the majority of the house is brick. Our trim is white. Our shutters and front door are a very dark green - nearly black. Our roof is not very obvious from the front of our house.

Currently our house has yellow paint but we will be repainting it. We are leaning towards grey.

We have pavers for our front walk/porch and back porch that were just installed. All our landscaping was just completed so in the pictures, things look a bit bare with all new plant.

We like the European Blend but would like suggestions for a custom blend.

Thank you.

**************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Hello,

Thank you for sending a variety of images of your home. I can see how many nice improvements you have already made to your home and a DaVinci roof will be perfect to top off your look.

I can see that you enjoy the interplay of pattern and color from the design you selected for the newly installed pavers. I think that works very well with the colors and style of your home. I also think going with gray on the siding will look great with the pavers and brick.

For the roof I recommend you go with subtler variations in color rather than a more distinct pattern such as the European blend. On their own each pattern is beautiful but when added to the same exterior they can start to compete with each other for "visual attention" and then none of them will stand out. Instead think about going with the subtle color variations that is possible with DaVinci's VariBlend technology.

If you are still set on pattern you could get away with it because so little of your roof shows but I would still recommend a pattern that incorporates 2 or 3 grays rather than different colors.

If you want something a bit different, DaVinci Roofscapes is about to release a new VariBlend. It is a color called Smokey Gray that is between Slate Gray and Slate Black. I think this color would be a great choice to give your home a distinctive look.

Take a look at these three options and think about how less pattern on the roof can make the other patterns make more impact to your overall look. I think you will see how going more solid on your roof can bring your other patterns to life.

Sincerely,

Kate Smith

Winter Roofing Installation With No Worries

Temperatures are dropping and you're adding another sweater to stay warm. But, what about your home? Have you missed the "window of opportunity" to add a new roof to your house before the winter weather settles in? No ... just pick the right polymer roofing tiles!

If you're thinking of a winter roof replacement, make sure to investigate the specifics of what temperatures a specific roof can be installed. Too many roofs have restrictions based on cold weather because their materials have the tendency to crack or break when the material gets frigid. That's not the case with DaVinci Roofscapes synthetic roofing material.

The special composition of our lightweight roofing systems allow for installation of our composite roof tiles in temperatures reaching down to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. That's much colder than most roofing products can be installed. Why? Because our carefully formulated imitation slate tiles and composite shake tiles are not brittle. DaVinci composite roofing tiles are manufactured to remain flexible in cold temperatures, so contractors can continue to install following a few guidelines.

And, at DaVinci, we offer Tackling Winter Roof Installations tips to contractors on cold weather installations, so they're educated and ready to take on the challenge of a winter luxury roof installation project. So, this winter treat yourself to a new roof ... and put on a pot of hot coffee to offer your weather-hardy DaVinci roofing installer!

Oh, and don't forget the snow guards.

Every Thanksgiving people reflect on what they're grateful for ... and many times, that's a reliable, worry-free roof over their heads.

We are fortunate at DaVinci Roofscapes that we hear from homeowners throughout the entire year about how they appreciate our composite roofing products. We'd like to share some of those grateful comments with you.

“More than fifty homes burned in our area during one wildfire. If the winds had been stronger, our home would have been included. Our old shake roof was a tinderbox waiting to ignite. Our new Bellaforté polymer tiles are rated Class A for fire retardance, which gives us tremendous peace-of-mind.”

“Watching the polymer roof go up overhead was a very moving experience. Q & A Guide to Snowguards

$
0
0

Does snow slide off of a DaVinci roof?
Snow tends to slide off all roofs, but is more likely to slide off metal, natural slate, glazed tile, and polymer tiles (like DaVinci roofs).  This is due to some of the same physical characteristics that help to make DaVinci such a long lasting beautiful roof.  DaVinci roofing products have smooth surfaces and don’t absorb water. This means that snow and ice have no place to “grip” as it might with some other roofing products. When snow begins to melt from a warm attic underneath, the snow blanket on top may slide off the roof all at once.

What is the solution?
Installing a pattern of snow guards or attaching snow fences near the eave can reduce or eliminate snow slides. Snow guards work by adding friction to the roof. Snow fences on the other hand, create  a barrier to prevent snow movement.  Snow guards are the preferred product for most areas while snow fences are used in very high snow areas like ski resorts.

Who should consider snow guards?
Snow guards should be considered in parts of the country where accumulating snowfalls occur. Many roofs or parts of roofs may not need any snow guards at all. In fact, some structures are designed so that snow will slide off of the roof, reducing the stress on the structure.

Does my house need snow retention?
It all depends on what the snow may fall on as it slides off of the roof. The installation of snow guards should be considered on roof areas where sliding snow might land on people or property. Decks, walkways and driveways are obvious examples of such areas.

What snow guards should I use?
There are many different types of snow guards. Snow guards for use on DaVinci roofs must have an attachment strap and be manufactured of long lasting- non-corrosive metals. The best types to use with DaVinci products are manufactured of copper, stainless steel or coated aluminum. Plastic snow guards, typically used on metal roofs, are not recommended for DaVinci roofs.

What if my roof is already installed without snow guards?
The best time to install snow guards is when your DaVinci roof is being installed. But if your DaVinci roof is already installed, don’t worry. There are snow guards available that are specifically designed to be installed after your roof is on.  These are known as retro-fit snow guards and this type of snow guard won’t compromise the integrity, warranty or longevity of your beautiful DaVinci roof.

Ask your contractor if you need snow guards.  The final decision on whether or not to install snow guards rests with you and your contractor.

For more information, a good resource for snow guards on DaVinci roofs is Rocky Mountain Snow Guards.

What's got us excited at DaVinci Roofscapes as we wind up 2014 and head into 2015? The new profile we've created for our DaVinci Single-Width Slate 12-inch tiles!

slate roofThis new Single-Width Slate profile has a more authentic quarried look, so it more accurately resembles natural slate roof tiles. We've spent the past year designing improvements to this slate alternative tile so that it now carries a sharper, more realistic profile. This includes edges that now have a more quarried look to them and deeper impressions in the imitation slate tiles to make them appear thicker.

We based this composite slate enhancement on customer feedback to our original Single-Width Slate tiles. And, here's some great news: while the new simulated slate roofing tiles look heavier, they're the same weight as our previous synthetic slate roof tiles, and installation procedures remain the same!

This improvement affects all eight different slate 12-inch tiles found in our blended bundles --- and all our color and blend options for Single-Width Slate. You can add some glitz and glam or give a nod to mod for an on-trend holiday home. 2014 is expected to be a season of uniqueness, building upon ‘creating new memories’.

Turn your home into the place to be this holiday season with a DaVinci Slate or Shake roof overhead and one of these four trends to inspire your decor. All interior inspiration and images are from Wayfair.

Fascination with the roaring 20s will make this year’s holidays chic and glitzy. “Think Great Gatsby!” says Kaemingk, a seasonal décor company which will be infusing a line of 1920s-inspired holiday décor with its new Glamour Time collection. Golds, black and whites, pearls and lots of jazzy-inspired looks will create a vintage look with a glamorous feel.

In building unique holiday décor, many companies are introducing style hybrids of two or more hot trends from years past. At Demcado, an artistry décor company, the Around the Block collection speaks hipster meets lodge. ‘Upcycled’ pieces are turning old tired décor into new whimsical holiday signs and unique decorating statement pieces with plaids, pops of color or fresh sayings that would make anyone smile.

A softer, more serene holiday is achieved when you introduce pastels or even white to your décor. Keeping things light and intentionally chosen, this style works best when done in minimal touches throughout your spaces. Infuse one pattern for interest – floral, subtle stripes or the like for a really beautiful, more feminine holiday look.

Personalize Your Holidays

On-trend always, personalized holiday items are timeless, classic and become instant family traditions. This year pulling out your family items and infusing them with some new pieces like a family tree skirt or hand embroidered stockings, create memories and décor together.

Selecting a trend for your home is easy when you examine personal style and favorite colors. From hipsters to homebodies built on tradition, there is always a beautiful, colorful way to make new memories under your roof this holiday season.
