Falling in Love with DaVinci Roofscapes

February is traditionally associated with the month of love. As soon as stores remove their Christmas decorations, hearts and cupid's arrows are decked throughout the aisles.

While we associate Valentine's Day with chocolates and flowers, is it possible to fall in love with your designer roof? According to many homeowners, the answer is YES! Here's what several satisfied homeowners shared with us recently about their new polymer roofing from DaVinci Roofscapes:

"I didn't realize how different a home can look based upon roof selection. The DaVinci roof totally enhanced our home in every way. Aesthetically, it anchors the house. The color, the weight and thickness of the tiles and the materials looks very substantial."

                                    Kerry Nelson - Oklahoma homeowner

"We felt that this faux-slate roof would be a huge improvement in our area over the old asphalt shingle roof. This roof truly replicates natural slate, and it definitely lends an air of authenticity to a somewhat contemporary home design."

                                    Rob Fanjoy - Maine homeowner

"This new roof, with the patina green on the copper gutters, complements the original historic look of the home and helps us more appropriately 'fit' in our historic neighborhood. The roofing tiles never look like plastic. Right from the start they looked very natural with their understated slate gray color."

                                    Kathy Telecky - Texas homeowner

“There’s not a week that goes by when someone passing by doesn’t remark on our ‘real slate’ roof. I enjoy explaining about the benefits of our polymer roof and have no worries now about future storms in our area. This roof can handle it.”

                                    Michael Klappa - Kansas homewoner

“We still have roofers and contractors come by to show our roof to their potential customers. Both my wife Anita and I love the look of the roof and couldn’t be more satisfied with DaVinci Roofscapes.”

                                    Chuck Musgrave - Oklahoma homeowner

Featured Project of the Year - Omaha, NE

For the last few weeks I have been featuring projects that were submitted to us to be honored as Featured Project of the Year at the upcoming International Roofing Expo in New Orleans. We chose 4 projects that we will feature on banners in our booth next week. In case you missed the other three, you can click here to read week 1, here to read week 2, and here to read about last week's project

In 2013 Omaha had a hail storm. A big one. Since then, shipments of our Class 4 Impact Rated, imitation slate and shake roofing material has exploded and John Higgins Weatherguard, Inc has been installing product all over town. A Class 4 Impact Rating means that in a test at UL, our tiles can withstand a 2" steel ball being dropped from 20 feet without cracking or breaking the tile. This is good news for those of us who live in an area prone to hail, as homeowners can often receive discounts on their homeowners insurance for going with a Class 4 roof.

Weatherguard, being as familiar with the DaVinci products as they are, even take some creative liberties with their customers by way of creating their own custom blends. The project featured here is a mix of 3 standard blends, Autumn, Tahoe and Mountain, done in Bellaforté Shake

Come and see us, and all four projects featured, next week at the International Roofing Expo which runs February 24-26 at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

Color Difficulties... Please Help

I'm having difficulties picking the right colors on my home. There is too much dark red tone.

Holcombe
Marine City, MI
Product: I'm not sure.

*********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Hello,

You have a lovely home and it will look even nicer with a new roof that complements the existing colors and downplays the reddish tones.

On your style home you have the choice of going with either the slate or shake profile.

There are two color directions that I recommend. Go with a brown that is darker in color than the brick and more brown/black than brown/red. The DaVinci Mountain blend would be a good fit. If you prefer to keep the trim in the brown family this would be a good choice. When it is time to repaint choose a brown that blends with the tones in your new roof.

Or you could go gray. European blend slate be a good choice because it has a few brownish tiles placed throughout that would blend with your brick and window frames. A solid gray could also work. In either case you could then change your main and accent colors to light gray/dark gray to update the overall look of your home while still going with a color scheme that would respect its history.

I hope that helps you to make your selection.

Sincerely,

Kate Smith

February is the month of love ... so naturally we wanted to share some insights from homeowners who love their DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor roofers!

From Bruce Froendt in Omaha, Nebraska

"The team at Weatherguard helped us devise a color palette that was very pleasing for our roof. The installers did a good job and cleaned up the job site every day. Very importantly, the company kept within the budget and was easy to work with throughout the entire process. We would recommend Weatherguard to others looking for a roofing contractor in our area!"

From Barry Walker in Killingworth, Connecticut

"We were very pleased with Eagle Rivet. The team was extremely efficient and did a very good job. They accomplished what they said they would do in the timeframe they quoted. We had an open dialogue throughout the entire project and they're an excellent company to work with."

From Jim Walker in Wichita, Kansas

"Our roofer, Heiland Roofing, was super. He understood our problem and made our job a priority because of the leaks we were experiencing. He was at the jobsite on a regular basis making sure his team was handling the project expertly. This is what I expect out of professionals like these. Mike Heiland has a DaVinci roof on his own home, which made an impression on us. He showed us other work he's done in the area. We couldn't have been more pleased with his services."

From John Simonelli in Norman, Oklahoma

"McRay Roofing was very professional.  They did an excellent job replacing my roof in a timely manner and with little disruption.  Their customer service was great.  I would highly recommend them."

How to Find a Contractor

What's in your toolbox?

If you're visiting the DaVinci Roofscapes website, your homeowner toolbox includes a handy chart that allows you to compare DaVinci simulated slate roofing products to natural slate and other synthetic slate roofing options. Click the chart and you can then compare DaVinci composite shake products to natural cedar shake roofing and to other simulated synthetic shake roofing options.

Your homeowner toolbox from DaVinci also includes full product warranty information on our polymer roofing, an overview of roofing terminology and, most importantly, important tips on how to select a contractor.

This section offers tips on where to find contractors, doing "due diligence" when interviewing and selecting a contractor and what to look for in a roofing proposal from a contractor. This handy tip sheet can make the start-to-finish project of re-roofing a home go much smoother.

Here are a few of the tips you'll find in our Homeowner Toolbox:

- Established roofing materials distributors are a good source for identifying contractors. They usually know who's been around and who pays their bills.

- If you are buying a DaVinci composite shake or synthetic slate roof and live in a geographic area that gets snow, make sure your proposal includes snow guards.

- Try to get trade references from where contractors purchase their materials.

Homeowner Celebrates Fire-Resistant Bellaforté Roof

Some homeowners get so excited about their new DaVinci Roofscapes designer roof that they include pictures of their homes on Facebook. Others feature their home's new luxury roof on their holiday greeting cards. And then there's Dan Baer ... who threw a roof party to celebrate his new simulated slate roofing product.

“We hosted a party on our balcony to celebrate our new roof,” says Baer, a homeowner in Yorba Linda, Calif. “I wanted everyone to reach out, touch this roof and see why we’re so excited.

"The DaVinci slate looks like authentic slate but it’s completely man-made. I’m thrilled with the quality of the product, the custom color we selected and the fire-resistancy of this polymer roof.”

Baer had good reason to celebrate when his DaVinci roof was installed in 2011. Just a few years earlier he and his family watched from their back porch as raging wildfire flames came within a half mile of their home.

“More than fifty homes burned in our area during the one fire,” says Baer. “If the winds had been stronger, our home would have been included. Our old shake roof was a tinderbox waiting to ignite. Our new Bellaforté polymer tiles are rated Class A for fire retardance, which gives us tremendous peace-of-mind.”

Both strong and beautiful, the Bellaforté roofing tiles installed on the home are made of a custom blend designed by Baer and his wife, Cynthia. “I selected colors to complement our overall home,” says Baer. “Our custom blend is a mix of light brown, medium brown, medium tan and dark amber. DaVinci used its VariBlend technology to create a continuous variation from tile to tile, which resulted in a beautiful, natural blend.”

Red, Red Roof

There's something about a red roof. It jumps out at you. It makes a statement. And, it sets your project apart.

Red Slate RoofJust ask Victoria Jackson, president of Classic Restorations in Stamford, Connecticut. Her company installed terracotta red DaVinci Roofscapes composite slate roofing on the Villa Maria Guadalupe Retreat. (see Terracotta-Hued Roof Added to Villa Maria Guadalupe Retreat in Connecticut)

"We had the DaVinci team create a custom color that involved 33 percent each of dark and medium terracotta with light clay colors to capture just the right blend to complement the retreat,” says Jackson. “We recommended the DaVinci slate tiles based on our past successful work with this company. We believe DaVinci is the best synthetic slate product in the marketplace and we’ve installed the roofing tiles on several homes in our area.”

Custom Color Polymer SlateHomeowners Carol and Ray Knoff understand the "lure of red." When it came time to replace the roof on their 111-year-old Queen Anne style home, they decided to replicate a red to gray roof coloring they had previously seen on a historic home with synthetic slate roofing. (see Vintage Home Gets Custom-Color Roof)

“All of our investigative work brought us to DaVinci Roofscapes," says Carol Knoff. "The DaVinci team was as excited as we were about the challenge of custom creating the color for our roof. They worked with us to develop a color combination of Midnight Gray and Cottage Red that really ‘pops’ and gives a positive first impression of our home while helping define the roof lines and architectural style.”

Topping off the 1904 St. Paul's Cathedral and Parish House in Oklahoma also had this installation team seeing red.

"Our research brought us to DaVinci, and we're very pleased with the results," says Mike Murphy, a member of St. Paul's Church and a director at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. " The primary reasons we selected the DaVinci Multi-Width Slate product were the low-maintenance factor coupled with the roof's impact- and fire-resistancy features. The warranty from the manufacturer and the ability to get the roofing tile in the fire brick red color we wanted really sold us on the product.

"The new roofs have been up since early in 2014 and the bright, attractive red color now serves to highlight our location in the community."

DaVinci Roofscapes Goes to Court

Look up at the historic Carroll County Courthouse in Carrollton, Ohio and you think you're seeing natural slate roof tiles on the rooftop. But, it's not.

Fake Slate RoofIn 2014 a re-roofing project was completed by Architectural Roofing Contractors, Inc. on the 1885 courthouse that now boasts Bellaforté Slate roofing in the European-VariBlend color blend.

"The DaVinci Roofscapes product was one of three presented to us along with slate and metal," says Ed Eick, building maintenance supervisor for Carroll County. "I found the DaVinci product to be very affordable to us along with being cost effecting in long-term maintenance."

The European VariBlend colors of Light Gray, Medium Gray, Dark Gray and Dark Purple was chosen because the color blend reminded Eick of the natural slate roofing materials already on the roof. This similarity helped the county retain its designation as a U.S. National Register of Historic Places site.

"I found it to be very appealing that the DaVinci product is 100 percent recyclable," says Eick. "Knowing that there are county offices that urge recycling, that in itself made sense that the county courthouse should be a good example of county officials looking out for the environment."

The results gained a big thumbs-up from Eick and the county commissioners. "Architectural Roofing Contractors did an excellent job and I made sure their company knew it," says Eick. "The roofers on the job said the product was nice to work with and easily installed. We have a roof and gutter system that will last us for years to come, hassle-free."

In marketing we often use phrases like, "Give your home a total makeover!" and things along those lines. We aren't alone, you often hear this phrase from other exterior product manufacturers (even those that manufacture smaller items). The truth is for most of us our roof is the largest fixed feature on our home. So when it is replaced, it truly does makeover the entire exterior. The below project photos show a roof where the homeowners took off an old wood shake roof and replaced it with a polymer, luxury roof tile. See for yourself how this multi-width slate roof, in Slate Gray, transformed the look of this home.

I Should Have Gotten Snow Guards

A freak hail storm three years ago in western North Carolina destroyed my asphalt roof shingles. Happily, that damage led to my insurance company authorizing a full roof replacement and my selection of Bellaforté simulated slate roofing tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes.

Snow GuardsLiving far from the mountains near Asheville is great. Terrific views, lots of activities and very little chance of snowstorms and severe weather --- until this winter.

Two weeks ago an unexpected storm left behind a thick one-inch coating of ice on everything, including my imitation slate tiles. When the sun finally warmed our area, huge sheets of ice came crashing off my roof. Why? Because I didn't order snow guards for my new manufactured slate roof.

Thinking this was a rare occurrence, I lived with the noisy explosions of sliding ice until the roof was clear. Then, a week later I knew my mistake of not ordering snow guards was coming back to haunt me. A frigid weather system dumped 8 inches of snow in my area overnight. As soon as the sun rose, massive sheets of snow came avalanching down on my bushes. The thunderous and unexpected sound had my heart beating quickly and my nervous dogs barking uncontrollably.

Lesson learned. Even though storms in my area are indeed rare, I'm looking into getting snow guards this Spring for my synthetic slate roofing. Once installed, the ice and snow will melt more evenly to reduce the massive slides off my imitation slate shingles ... resulting in saving my shrubbery and my sanity.

How Dark is Too Dark for Our Roof?

I am replacing our shake roof with a DaVinci product. I want to get the color right because this will hopefully be the only roof I will put on this house. I have considered the Mountain Blend, the Weathered Green Blend, Slate Gray-VariBlend and Slate Black-Vari-Blend or a combination of the mountain, gray and possibly green. I noticed that you have added Smokey Gray which I also think would look nice because I felt that black might be too dark but the slate gray not dark enough. I am attaching photos of the house and would appreciate your advice on the best roof color.

Hello Ms. Mardis,

You have a lovely home and I can see why you are considering each of the colors you mention. Here is what I recommend.

First, decide if you prefer the look of shake or slate. Either one could work very nicely on your home so it becomes a matter of personal taste. Changing to slate will be the bigger change and will add a bit of formality.

As for color, you are correct that black would be too dark. I like the dark gray of Smokey Gray or the dark gray/brown of Mountain depending on whether you chose Multi-Width Slate or Multi-Width Shake.

A blend of colors could work but a more solid color with the look of natural color variations like the ones I'm recommending will keep the focus on your entrance and the interesting details of the front of your home.

I hope those thoughts help you to make your final color selection.

Sincerely,

Kate Smith

March is a busy month. There are dozens of specialty celebrations, including fun observances such as Sock Monkey Day on the 7th, American Chocolate Week from the 15-21 and Mad for Plaid Month!

There are also plenty of serious-minded activities in March. For example, the first week is designated as Severe Storm Awareness Week by the National Weather Service, Women in Construction Week and National Write a Letter of Appreciation Week.

At DaVinci Roofscapes, we like to celebrate the third week of March --- National Manufacturing Week. Our world-class manufacturing operations are located in Lenexa, Kansas, so we're proud to boast that all are imitation slate and synthetic shake roofing materials are Made in America.  Our dedication to producing top-quality sustainable roofing has us celebrating all month long --- which is great because March is also Employee Spirit Month!

If you're celebrating this month, remember to stock up on the specialty foods we all love. March 6 is Oreo Cookie Day, the 14th is Potato Chip Day, the 17th is St. Patrick's Day and during the last week of the month there's National Chocolate Covered Raisins Day on the 24th, followed by Pecan Day on the 25th and Taters Day on the 31st.

Finally, there's one celebration we hope you won't join in on --- March 1-7 is National Procrastination Week. Forget about that week. Instead focus on getting your designer roof ready for severe weather that comes each Spring ... usually starting when Daylight Savings Time kicks in, which this year is March 8.

Do Extreme Freeze-Thaw Cycles Affect DaVinci Roof Tiles?

$

In some parts of the country roofing materials experience very harsh weather with extreme temperature change. The high country in the Rockies or Sierras is very indicative of this. In these mountain areas daily temperature swings of 30 to 40 degrees are common and 50 degrees or more are not unheard of. The ambient temperature can be 75 degrees wPolymer Roofith a roof temperature of 120 degrees or more during the day and then the temperature can fall considerably below freezing overnight. This change in temperature, especially if moisture is added to the mix, can be very troublesome. If a roof covering absorbs moisture and goes through-freeze thaw cycles there can be  damage that results in crazing, cracking, splitting, etc. Over time these freeze-thaw cycles can destroy a roofing product.

At DaVinci Roofscapes we have designed our tiles to be impervious to freeze-thaw. DaVinci tiles don’t absorb water so there are no issues with the tremendous force of freezing water. In addition, DaVinci tiles are very thermally stable, in fact the coefficient of thermal expansion is 10-3in/in °F. What this means is that the DaVinci 12” slate tiles expands 1/12” with a 100 degree temperature swing. Because of this you don’t get the buckling or movement that puts strain on fasteners as some products do.

DaVinci Roofscapes is a very popular roofing product for the resort areas of the Rockies and Sierras for a reason; it works. Well, also because it looks great!

Bellaforte Composite ShakeNational Color Therapy Month is a time to celebrate the healing powers of color. In a month where spring blooms are just beginning to poke through the ground, March’s lively greens, pops of yellows, soft pinks and reds are all reminders that winter is finally giving way to spring. National Color Therapy Month recognizes the power color has to renew, revive, and replenish our energy.

Color Therapy has been around for thousands of years, used as an energy healing method. Whether you have ever visited a color therapist or perhaps never even heard of it, we are all practicing some level of color therapy daily. Subconsciously, we utilize color in our lives to feel a certain way. Throw on a red sweater or paint your front door red and we stimulate our energy to high levels and send that out into the world. Blue has relaxing powers and is often a ‘favorite color’ because of its soothing qualities. Pink is youthful, fun and happy.

DaVinci Roofscapes Multi-Width Synthetic Slate Roof ShinglesIn honor of a full month devoted to color, I suggest switching things up in your home. Infuse positivity and renewal with greens and splashes of happy yellows. Replace the covers on your outdoor furnishings with an eye-catching color. Think about how you could add fresh color for your home exterior. Working from the top down think about how color on your roof or any of the other elements of your exterior can enhance your home. Begin with the 50 shades of DaVinci. Think about what you want to convey to the world as you select colors to create a cohesive scheme.

Use Color Therapy Month as a time to explore how you can use color to enhance your home and your life. To learn more about the effects of color see A Glimpse Into The Meaning, Symbolism & Psychology of Color.

Record Snowfalls Remind Us to Have Snowguards for Composite Roofing

$
0
0

At least eight feet of snow fell in the Boston area this past winter season --- probably more by the time you read this story. Record-breaking amounts of snow have also been recorded in Buffalo and other northeastern areas of the country.

If you live in the snow-socked North or Midwest, you'd better have snow guards on your polymer roofing.

What are snow guards? As the sun warms accumulated snow on a composite shake or imitation slate roof, the masses of accumulated snow can slide off in large chunks, causing an avalanche effect. Snow guards are small metal pieces that are strategically placed on your luxury roof (usually on the bottom portions) to help the snows melt more evenly to reduce the avalanche effect.

At DaVinci Roofscapes, we recommend that all homeowners living in areas that routinely see snowfall each year have snow guards installed. This way the melting snows won't come down and harm your landscaping, deck areas or people who may be nearby when the snow slides.

Even if your roof does not have snow guards on it now, they can be retrofitted to your plastic slate or composite shake roof this Spring. The small, sturdy accessories or anchors can be installed by a professional roofer during warmer weather to prepare your home for next winter.

For more details on snow guards, see To Guard ... or Not to Guardand Slip, Sliding Away... Might Need Snow Guards.

Hello,

You have a lovely home with classic details. I think Castle Gray is a good choice in keeping with the style and period of your home.

Either the DaVinci Single-Width or Bellaforté profile would work. I prefer the larger Bellaforté tiles for your roof because of the scale of your home. I also think the look will be closer to your original look of the roof.

I hope that helps you to make a final decision.

Roofing ROI

It’s no secret that home upgrades cost time and money. But certain projects can actually save you money in key areas and improve the resale value of your home, while making it more beautiful and livable now.

Fake Shake RoofThe roof is an integral part of a house’s curb appeal. It’s also a vital protective layer between the elements and your family. Polymer roofing from DaVinci Roofscapes has the advantage of being impact-, fire- and weather-resistant, as well as beautiful.

A new roof can pay off, according to “Remodeling" magazine, which cites a 71.6 percent recoup of costs in their 2015 Cost vs. Value study.

Here's some great advice: skip over bargain-basement priced roofs, even if you’re on a budget. What’s important is finding a luxury roof that will be virtually maintenance free for years to come. You may pay more out of pocket now, but you’ll save big on repairs, inspection and maintenance in the long run. (See A DaVinci Slate Tile Roof - An Investment In Your Home's Aesthetic And Re-Sale Value!)

Manmade imitation slate and simulated shake roofing offer the authentic look of natural materials but are more resistant to chipping, flaking and splintering over time. And, with the 50 standard colors available from DaVinci, you can focus on your home’s 'top down' curb appeal to create a cohesive exterior.

Hail, Hail, the Hail's Coming Near!

$

Spring weather can turn ugly and dangerous very quickly. An innocent-looking thunderstorm can turn into a hail event when updrafts push water droplets into a part of the atmosphere which is below the freezing temperature.

The results? Pounding hail that can ruin crops, dent cars and damage roofs.

Hail storms --- which can occur in any part of the country given the right weather conditions ---can be dangerous because of two major reasons. The icy pellets coming out of the sky can fall at speeds of up to 100mph and they can generally range from a half inch to three inches in diameter. Just imagine dropping a baseball from an airplane and having it hit your roof ... that's what it can be like for hail to hit your home.

At DaVinci Roofscapes, our customers sleep easier at night during scary thunderstorms, hail events and other weather activities. Why? Because our impact-resistant polymer roof tiles resist impact, fire and high winds.

Made for strength, composite roofing tiles from DaVinci actually allow hail to bounce off our durable roofs with minimal to no damage. And, to prove our confidence in our imitation slate and simulate shake roofing materials, we provide a limited lifetime material warranty with all DaVinci lightweight roofing systems.
