From the Architect's Corner - Accent Stripes

0
0

It isn't an architectural detail you see everyday, but occasionally a historic project will call for a stripe of a contrasting color in a course of synthetic slate roof tiles. These last few weeks I have spent some time with an architect discussing this very detail for a historic project he is working on where he is working to match a quarried slate roof on the same block. Luckily, I have some examples to show of this detail on projects previously installed. Between our slate and shake product lines we have 50 individual colors to choose from, giving endless possibilities for accent rows, or something more elaborate, to be built in.

Happy Friday, Architects!

Last month, Texas Tile Roofing out of Ft. Worth, TX registered this Single-Width Slate project with the DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor Program. When I spoke with the folks over at Texas Tile Roofing about this composite slate roof project they said, "We like to install a product for the homeowner that we know is going to last, and is going to last for years to come looking as great as the day we installed it. We feel that DaVinci is a product and a company that we can count on to perform for years and years for our customers."

You've made the smart decision to invest in synthetic slate roofing from DaVinci Roofscapes. Congratulations! This choice means you'll have decades of easy roof maintenance ahead along with no worries about insect infestations, hail damage or fire spread.

Now it's time to decide which simulated slate roofing to purchase from DaVinci. Fortunately, there are unlimited possibilities with our colors and slate options!

Here's a fast breakdown of your slate roof alternatives:

DaVinci Multi-Width Slate: Our multi-width profile comes in 12", 10", 9", 7" and 6" widths. Bundles of the fake slate tiles arrive at the job site pre-sorted by color and size, eliminating on-site sorting and guesswork.

DaVinci Single-Width Slate: Single-width synthetic slate roofing tiles come in a consistent 12" tile width that provides the beauty of a clean, simple design.

Bellaforté Slate: Our 12" wide Bellaforté Slate tiles include a leading edge tab that helps secure every slate shingle to the next to improve wind performance. The snap-fit tiles also create a built-in rain gutter.

All composite slate tiles from DaVinci are 100% recyclable and made of virgin resins to guarantee a sustainable roofing product. For more details on our simulated slate roofing, see DaVinci Slate Roofing Rivals Natural Slate  and Patchwork Problems Not a Worry with DaVinci Imitation Slate Roofs.

Roofing 101: Up on the Roof

0
0

Sure you know that there's a roof over your head to protect your home from severe weather, but have you ever really thought about what goes into creating that roof?

Here's a look at what is really happening on your roof ... and why it's important to understand your roof.

First of all, a roof starts with decking, which is the solid base that covers the framing of your home. To this decking, flashings are added, followed by self-adhered membrane and 30-pound felt. All of these items are put in place to help protect the deck and provide a waterproof surface before the roofing tiles are added.

When it's time to start installing the slate roof tiles or cedar roof shingles, the first course is always the "starter course" that goes along the eave. Once these are installed, then the field tiles (the majority of the roof) are put in place. In some geographic areas, where snowfall is prevalent, snowguards are also installed at the same time. Finally, the field tiles are topped off with hip or ridge tiles.

When it comes to roof installations, the more varied the roof elevations, the trickier installation can be. For example, a simple "A" frame roof on a mountain retreat would be fairly easy to install, but a home with multiple dormer windows and lots of "nooks and crannies" becomes more challenging and time-consuming to roof.

Hi! I'm Allen Lyle...

One of the, I guess you would call it, “quirky” things about being in the profession I’m in is that total strangers often walk up to me and ask home improvement questions. I kid you not, I was standing in Wal-Mart the other day and a lady walks up with three different types of fasteners and says, “I want to hang a new flat-screen TV on a brick wall. Which of these would work best?” Not a “Hi” or “I sure love the television show.” Just walks up and BAM….Truthfully, I never mind helping with advice, but next time, at least introduce yourself!

Speaking of advice, just last week we got a call on the radio program asking about the best type of roofing materials. This particular caller asked our opinion about metal roofing vs. traditional asphalt shingles. They wanted to make sure I understood that they were looking for something that would last.

So I asked the caller about other roofs in the neighborhood and no one else had metal. My response: “I really don’t think a metal roof would complement either your house or the surrounding homes. Have you thought about a polymer roofing product?” You’d have thought I was speaking in tongues!

I explained how this is a man-made product designed to look like a natural material and her immediate response was, "Oh no, no, no. I don’t want a plastic-looking roof.”

Now, I love it when this happens, because all I have to say is, “Let me tell you about DaVinci Roofscapes" ….and I get to talk about the realistic looking composite slate and synthetic shake products.

I’m particularly fond of the new 12" Single-Width Slate profile I just saw this year at the International Builders' Show. I was inches away and still couldn’t tell the difference between it and a true piece of slate ... it’s that good. But given a choice, I’d pick these imitation slate tiles over real slate any day of the week.

I’m a true skeptic, so I put it to the test. Not that I needed to, because DaVinci has done a good job of making sure their products meet some pretty high standards, but I have to see for myself.

I took one of the fake slate pieces and placed it in the freezer for a few hours. Once I removed it, I took a baseball bat to it with swings that would make Hank Aaron, and even The Babe himself, envious. Not a crack, split or splinter.

Next, a propane torch……you want to call this fire resistant? Watch me set it on fire……and…. nothing. I’m not kidding you, this is impressive material. Plus, this manufactured slate tile is much lighter in weight than a true slate roof, so installation is faster and easier. With all these features, I can practically guarantee that you’re going to have the best-looking and most durable roof in the neighborhood.

... at least you will until the neighbors catch on and put DaVinci on their roofs; but, with 50 available colors at DaVinci, everyone can get the same durability and beauty without it looking the same!

The 5 Things You Must Know Before Starting Your Home Exterior Makeover

0
0

When thinking about making improvements to the outside of your home, you must look at the essential elements that create its overall appearance and style. Each product, color and design decision you make must work together. It can be easy to fall in love with the color of a home you see in a magazine but it might not be the right choice for your home. That is when it is especially important to know the five things you need to think about before starting any exterior makeover project.

Above you see a home makeover from the "Shake it Up" Exterior Color Contest. I thought about each of these 5 things as I planned my recommendations for remodeling this home. I think the results speak for themselves.

1. Some Things Can Change - Some Must Stay The Same

What design elements of your home are permanent "fixed features" and which elements can be easily changed. Most homes today are constructed of multiple materials. These include shake, slate, brick, stone, stucco, concrete, wood, etc. Identify the fixed features on your house  -- roofing,  full or partial stone or brick facades, hardscapes, pathways and retaining walls. The surface of each may look different but most often the materials will have a common color or color cast. If you are going to be adding a new material -- especially one with a permanent color -- identify the common color of the fixed features already existing on the home and chose a color that will work well for your home’s overall color scheme.

2. Color Like Real Estate Is All About Location, Location, Location

Certain colors and materials may work well in one area of the country yet be completely out of place in another location. I can almost guarantee that the exterior look you loved when you lived in the Northeast won't look nearly as nice on your new place in southern Florida.  The light and landscape of the two areas are quite different and therefor the design elements that work in each area are different. Each region of the country has prevalent colors based on the housing styles, available materials, natural surroundings and the quality of light. Determine the colors in your area (often those you see a great deal of on other homes) to stick with regional colors.

3. Do You Want Your Colors To Disguise Or Surprise?

Some people want their home to standout. Others want their choices to be unexpected or unusual. Still other homeowners prefer their home to blend in with the natural environment. Decide what you want for your home. Then consider how to achieve that goal by looking at your setting. Are you near the waterfront, a desert or a mountain? Temper the colors on your home’s exterior to blend in or stand apart from your surroundings or the natural colors around you. The goal I most often go for is "standing out while still fitting in!"

4. You've Got Style & So Does Your Home

You chose clothes that match your personality and style, right? Approach choosing color, and materials for your home in the same way. Always remember to select design elements that support the home’s style and architecture. Determine your home’s style (are you a Ranch? Tudor? Victorian? Art Deco? Greek Revival?) and then do some research online to determine what colors are most often associated with your style of home.

5. There Are Just Some Colors You Have To Use

If you live in a historic district or in a development governed by a Homeowners Association(HOA), you will need to check for guidelines and/or restrictions on selecting colors and materials your home. You may also be required to have your selections approved before you begin your renovation work.

Those are the 5 things you must know before starting your home exterior makeover. Think about these 5 simple ideas and you will have a fabulous home exterior from the top of your DaVinci lifetime roof all the way down to the walkway that welcomes your guest.

Rest, Relaxation and Roofing

A place to unpack, relax and lay down after a busy day. That's what most hotels offer their guests. But, at the Beach Terrace Inn and Hotel Breakers, they also offer a designer roof overhead from DaVinci Roofscapes that boasts a Class A Fire Rating for added peace of mind.

The eco friendly roof on the Beach Terrace Inn is almost as picturesque as the calming Pacific Ocean waters just a few feet from the California hotel. Fake SlateSimulated slate roofing atop the 48 rooms in an Aberdeen blend of stone, gray, brown, green and purple shades, offers an eye-pleasing appeal to the structure. And, the easy-care polymer roofing resists the damages of salt air and sea spray, so the fake slate roof always looks its best.

Also located on restful waters, the Hotel Breakers sits between Lake Erie and Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio. The historic hotel is now in the second phase of having Bellaforté synthetic slate roofing installed over the entire hotel complex. (see Cedar Point Hotel Gets Bellaforté Roof)

"One of the chief reasons Bellaforté slate roofing tiles were chosen for the Hotel Breakers re-roofing project originally was because the installation could be done in cold weather without having to warm the polymer roof tiles before installation," says Jim Carson, vice president of A-STAR, the roofing company in charge of installing both phases of the imitation slate roof.

While the Union Printers Home in Colorado Springs had similar cold weather concerns when installing DaVinci composite roofing on their 1892 historic structure for 120 assisted living residents, there are those lucky hospitality projects, like the Westin St. John Villas Timeshare, that have no worries. Located in the tropical paradise of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Bellaforté Shake tile roofs were installed by people in shorts --- not in snowsuits!

Round Two for DaVinci Roofscapes Installation at Hotel Breakers

0

The saying "life's a roller coaster" certainly resonates with roofer Jim Carson. He and his team from A-STAR have been "up on the roof" for the second winter in a row installing

Bellaforté simulated slate roofing high atop the Hotel Breakers at Cedar Point theme park.

With Cedar Point's famous roller coasters as the backdrop, the A-STAR team installed 450 squares of composite slate tile from DaVinci Roofscapes --- plus on four turrets --- in a custom Milano blend featuring combinations of gray and purple tones. The project started in November of 2014 and lasted until late April 2015. (See Cedar Point Hotel Gets Bellaforté Roof)

"Our experience with installation on the first phase of this project last year made it a bit easier for the second phase," says Carson, vice president of A-STAR out of Macedonia, Ohio. "However, there's nothing that can really help when temperatures hit record lows and with the brutal snowfall we had this year."

Backed by a lifetime warranty, all DaVinci green roofing materials are designed to remain flexible at extreme temperatures, making it possible to install roofing tiles during all types of weather. The DaVinci resin system for all products has passed the freeze-thaw ICC-ES Test (Acceptance Criteria AC07, section 4.9) with exposure to temperatures from -40 F to 180 F in 22 hour cycles for approximately a month.

DaVinci sustainable roofing products have also undergone the accelerated weathering test ASTM 4798 test for 4,500 hours with very little significant change in tensile strength. That test is six months of actual exposure, but is equivalent to several years of exposure to the sun. The test replicates real world weather extremes such as high temperatures, moisture and thermal shock.

"One of the chief reasons Bellaforté slate roofing tiles were chosen for the Hotel Breakers re-roofing project originally was because the installation could be done in cold weather without having to warm the polymer roof tiles before installation," says Carson. "This is the final phase of the installation, which has gone very well. While there may be more re-roofing projects on site here, I don't believe we'll be battling Mother Nature as much in the future."

Lumpy Rugs, Pickles and Smiles!

While May often signals the pre-launch of summer activities, it's also a time to focus on some important things ... like Better Sleep Month, National Family Week and Memorial Day.

If you're not quite ready to get serious, then have some fun celebrating World Belly Dance Day on May 9th, National Lumpy Rug Day on the 3rd and International Pickle Week, which is the third week of May. If these silly activities bring a smile to your face, that's terrific, because May is also National Smile Month!

At DaVinci Roofscapes, one of our favorite designations in May is Breathe Easy Month ... that's because we've found that homeowners investing in polymer roofing do indeed tend to breathe easier once they have an impact- and fire-resistant designer roof overhead.

But, while we believe you'll breathe easier with a composite roofing decision made for your home, you can also take time in May to mark your calendar for these fun and tasty celebrations:

May 1 - National Chocolate Parfait Day

May 8 - National Coconut Cream Pie Day

May 22 - National Vanilla Pudding Day

May 26 - National Cherry Dessert Day

If these sweet days make you think of how you'll burn off the calories, don't worry --- May is also National Tennis Month!

Sunscreen for Your Designer Roof

0
0

Have you ever wondered WHY some roofing shingles seem to fade over time? Maybe they don't have enough "sunscreen" to combat Mother Nature's intense rays!

Fake Slate Eco Blend TilesSince May is Ultraviolet (UV) Awareness Month, we wanted to help educate you on how a DaVinci roof can help resist getting damaged by the sun's powerful rays --- without lathering up with sunscreen.

At DaVinci Roofscapes, our composite roofing tiles are manufactured from a proprietary engineered polymer that includes multiple virgin resins, organic fire retardant, state-of-the-art color and UV stabilizers and inorganic pigments that are safe for the environment. These UV stabilizers are what helps protect our polymer roof tiles from fading --- even after decades of intense daily sun exposure.

Want even more protection from the sun? Then consider our EcoBlend tiles that actually reflect sunlight and heat away from your home. These composite roofing tiles are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council and have earned the designation as an ENERGY STAR® ualified product. The qualified colors include EcoBlend Weathered Gray (in Medium, Medium Light, Medium Dark, Light and Dark) and EcoBlend Gray (in Dark, Light and Medium). (See What is EcoBlend? )

This summer, keep the SPF50+ sunscreen for yourself. And, for your roof, consider sustainable roofing from DaVinci with its own built-in sunscreen!

History Repeats Itself --- With DaVinci Composite Roofing

0

There's a saying that history repeats itself. At DaVinci Roofscapes, we've adapted that saying to: Historic roofs CAN repeat themselves!

Since it's National Historic Preservation Week, we want to share some of our favorite roofing projects that have involved historic buildings getting replacement composite roofing to replicate their past original roofs.

> First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville, Oregon - 1881 church replaced decaying cedar shake shingles with DaVinci Shake in Tahoe blend after the town's Historic Architectural Review Committee approved the DaVinci synthetic shake tiles.

Fake Shake

> Peterson House in Durango, Colorado - 1880s home located at the Animas Museum site chose Fancy Shake composite shake in Mountain Blend after the original milled wood roof shingles crumbled.

Cedar Shake Alternative

> Telecky Home in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas - 1914 home had original wooden cedar shake roofing, covered up over the years with several layers of asphalt shingles. The homeowners wanted historically-accurate cedar shake shingles and chose DaVinci Multi-Width polymer roofing in Slate Gray for their designer roof.

Fake Slate

> St. Paul's Cathedral and Parish House in Oklahoma City - The 1904 Norman-Gothic church structure was badly damaged in the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. A DaVinci composite slate roof in fire brick red was added to the church as part of the rebuilding effort.

Home Improvement Month Tips for Your Roof

0
0

The focus in May during Home Improvement Month for many homeowners should start at the top of the house. That's the advice of home improvement expert Allen Lyle with Today's Homeowner with Danny Lipford.

"The roof is the most essential item that helps protect your home and its contents, so you want to place a priority on its care," says Lyle, co-host of the Today's Homeowner with Danny Lipford radio show.

Lyle suggests homeowners hire professional roofers or roofing inspectors to evaluate roofs after major storms or with older homes. (see also Worried? Sleep Easier with a DaVinci Roof Overhead)

Fake SlateFor homeowners doing their own evaluation he recommends the following:

Tip 1 - Make sure to inspect your roof on a windy day. That's when you're most likely to see broken tiles or those not secured properly because they'll be “flapping” in the wind.

Tip 2 - Take a pair of binoculars and "inspect" your roof from all angles around your house. Look for missing or damaged tiles that may indicate the life of your roof is coming to an end. If that's the case, consider a replacement eco friendly roof made of polymer roofing tiles, like those from DaVinci Roofscapes, that offer long-lasting beauty and durability, without maintenance hassles.

Tip 3 - If you have asphalt shingles, when you clean out your gutters, look to see how many asphalt granules are in the gutter. An abundance of shingle granule residue means your roofing product is starting to break down and fail, which may mean a new roof is in your future.

Tip 4 - To view and fix problem areas yourself, use caution on the roof and with ladders. Always work with at least one other person and take special care with tools brought onto the roof to secure them.

Tip 5 - When severe weather or a hail storm comes through your area, note the date and time immediately. If you think your roof has been damaged, contact your insurance agent first. There's no need to contact a roofer. Your insurance company will send their own inspector to evaluate any damage that may have occurred.

"All areas of the country are subject to severe weather of different kinds," says Lyle. "From strong winds to wildfires to hail, our roofs take a battering from Mother Nature. One of the best way to protect your home is to invest in a roof that can stand up to the elements and has a long, solid warranty.

"I've put some composite slate and synthetic shake roofing tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes through my own tests. I've burned them with a blow torch, frozen them, pounded on them with a baseball bat and they still look like new. That's the advantage of having an advanced man-made product on your roof. These synthetic roofing tiles are a real asset for any home."

Happy Receptionists Day!

Happy Receptionists Day to Sharon Underwood --- our wonderful DaVinci Roofscapes"voice of DaVinci" for the past 16 years!

If you've ever called in to our headquarters in Kansas, Sharon's is the friendly voice you'll hear. She's been answering the phones, performing administrative and human resources duties and providing helpful insights since February of 1998 --- a full year before we actually launched the company.

This past year brought a new change for Sharon, and for our other DaVinci team members, when our headquarters moved to its new location in Lenexa, Kansas. This didn't rattle Sharon though, as she keeps answering the phones and sharing our polymer roofing information with callers in her same professional manner ... just from a new location! (see New DaVinci Roofscapes Facility)

"This new facility has brought many changes to our company," says Underwood. "We have more exposure to the public here so we're getting walk-in traffic. The larger location means we can hire more employees than at our other location. And, we all have a renewed sense of pride in the composite roofing products we manufacture.

"We're also seeing more requests than ever before for facility tours, which is great. This is an upscale environment and here we can really showcase our terrific synthetic slate and imitation shake roofing materials."

New Imitation Slate Roof Atop Grace Episcopal Church

0
0

After almost 100 years atop Grace Episcopal Church in Mansfield, Ohio, the heavy original slate tile roof was replaced in late 2014 with lightweight polymer roofing tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes.

Polymer Slate Roof"We would categorize the original slate as in poor to average condition," says Roman Koval, business manager at Cleveland Commercial Roofing. "This was a soft slate that was costing thousands of dollars each year for the church in upkeep. Selecting the durable DaVinci Single-Width Slate profile was a sound investment for this historic building."

DaVinci synthetic slate roofing tiles are carefully crafted using virgin resins to guarantee a sustainable roofing product. The 12" wide tiles are modeled after actual slate and resist impact, severe weather and are Class A Fire Rated. Backed by a Lifetime Limited Materials Warranty, the simulated slate roofing offer the church decades of easy maintenance care.

"Our church dealt with the high mounting costs of maintaining our real slate roof for many years," says Rev. Joe Ashby with Grace Episcopal Church. "The slate needed constant attention and wasn't energy efficient. After we saw the authentic appearance of the DaVinci product, we knew we'd found the solution to our problem."

The aesthetic appeal of the DaVinci roof boasts an authentic quarried look to replicate genuine slate roof tiles. "Those people who don't know we had the church re-roofed still think we have the slate roof --- that's how realistic the slate appearance is of the polymer roofing product," says Ashby. "We're exceptionally happy with our choice of DaVinci and have already recommended it to another church in our area."

From the Architect's Corner - Mixing Two Products

There are many amazing features of our Bellaforté Slate. These lightweight tiles are our most cost effective product, they self-align for a fast installation, and they boast top performance ratings for fire, wind, and impact. Because of their self-aligning design, however, it can be difficult to maneuver the 12" x 15" tile around small or curved portions of the roof. The solution for this is to use our Multi-Width or Single-Width slate alternative on the parts of the roof where you need a bit more flexibility in design such as eyebrow windows, turrets or bay windows. The multi-width and single-width products are not self-aligning systems, so there is more wiggle room in pliability and cutting tiles to fit into a specific area. See photo examples below.

Happy Friday Architects!
