Hard to Bungle Cedar Shake Roofing Colors on Bungalow Homes

0
0

Relaxed and refined, Bungalow-style homes offer a variety of opportunities to welcome color in many ways. According to Kate Smith, chief color maven with Sensational Color, simplicity is the hallmark of Bungalows, but that doesn't mean the colors have to be simple.

Cedar Shake Roofing"Bright colors with contrasting white trim can really add personality to a Bungalow-style home," says Smith. "I've seen fresh color schemes of nocturnal sea complemented by white trim and rich woodgrain doors on these home styles that I love. Because a Bungalow is often a one-story or two-story home with dormer windows, there's lots of ways to play with color."

Smith always recommends working from the "top down" when adding color to a home. And for Bungalows that usually means starting with a cedar shake roof.

"Similar to an Arts and Crafts style home, a Bungalow really looks great with the texture and color of cedar shingles," says Smith. "The color palettes I've seen on composite shake roofing from DaVinci Roofscapes mimics nature but offers long-term resistance to fading from the sun. This means the color you select is the one you'll enjoy for many years.

"One of my favorite blends of synthetic roofing material colors for a Bungalow home is the DaVinci Autumn blend which has a combination of five shades of cedar colors. Very natural looking to set the home apart in a neighborhood."

Here's another tip from Smith: Think "FRESH" When Selecting Roof Colors

Polymer Slate "Hides" Rooftop HVAC System at Valpo

Back to school time at Valparaiso University in Indiana this year means sophomores flocking to their new homes at Beacon Hall.

Completed earlier this year, the inside of the four-story suite-style residence facility boasts a 24-hour computer lab, prayer room, floor lounges and laundry facilities. On the outside, it's what you don't see that's impressive.

Lightweight Roofing MaterialsHidden behind roof "screens" covered with Single-Width Slate polymer roof tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes are HVAC systems. What appears to be a peak at the top is not actually the top of the roof --- it's where the roof/screen stops so that the HVAC equipment can rest on a flat membrane roof and be open to the sky above, but hidden from view.

"The site location was very tight so we needed to have the HVAC equipment on the roof," says Fred Plant, executive director of campus planning & projects and environmental sustainability at Valparaiso University. "The building design is a form of a Collegiate Gothic so we wanted to have a slate tile roof. However real slate is too heavy for this type of application.

"FGM Architects was familiar with the imitation slate roof from DaVinci and made the recommendation. We felt that the composite slate properly simulated natural slate, had a good warranty and was budget friendly."

Installed by Midland Engineering Company, it's the first time the slate gray DaVinci sustainable roofing product has been used on the Valpo campus, but it may not be the last. "If we have an appropriate application we would certainly consider using the DaVinci composite roofing again on campus," says Plant. "The finished look of the product on Beacon Hall is very appealing ... and it does exactly what the design intended it to do --- it hides the HVAC systems from site."

Sustainable RoofingWe regularly get questions about the use of solar panels with our products. It makes sense. According to the Houzz contributors for Forbes, the price of solar panels has reduced 60% since 2011. While we don't collect data on how many of our eco friendly roof tiles also have solar panel systems, I can tell you that as the photos of these projects come across my desk I see them on a semi-regular basis. This project was installed by TCC Roofing out of Eagle, Colorado. The tiles were Single-Width Slate in a Custom Blend

Composite Roofing Resists Mold

Ick. MOLD. That four-letter word can cause any homeowner to tremble.

Since September is Mold Awareness Month, our team at DaVinci Roofscapes wants to calm your moldy fears and offer some information and ways to eliminate your designer roof ever being associated with the word "ick."

Designer RoofOverall, mold likes to grow where it's damp. That's why you will see it accumulate on bathroom walls and showers, in not-so-recently opened jars of food that are left too long in the refrigerator, and in closed-in attic spaces.

The best way to prevent the "dreaded mold" is with proper ventilation. So, put on the ceiling fan when taking a shower, tightly seal opened food containers, and add ventilating louvers to your attic.

You should also make sure to add a continuous ridge vent at the top of your roof ---- especially in steep slope roofing situations. And, to prevent mold from growing on your designer roof, make sure to research the roofing material you select for your home.

Simulated slate roofing and composite shake tiles from DaVinci resist mold, algae and fungus growth. That's important because natural cedar shake shingles can be a smorgasbord for mold and algae. (See Simulated Shake Roofing Without the Hassles of Real Cedar Roofing)

At DaVinci, we manufacture our tiles to resist these elements of nature --- plus insects, decay and rot. Thanks to our proprietary manufacturing techniques and our lifetime warranty on DaVinci plastic roofing materials, you'll never be saying "ick" when looking at your beautiful roof --- instead the word coming out will be "ahhhhhh."

Building Up at Biltmore Estate

Visitors to the expansive Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina will soon have a new location close to the historic home where they can spend the night.

Fake Cedar ShakeThe Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate, the second lodging property on the estate, is now under construction and scheduled to open in December of this year. With 209 guestrooms and many amenities, the 130,000 square foot hotel is located within the estate's popular Antler Hill Village and adjacent to the estate winery.

The design of the hotel complements other buildings on the property nestled in the western North Carolina mountains. While those structures have aging cedar shakes on their roofs, the new hotel will be covered in simulated shake roofing from DaVinci Roofscapes.

The hotel's design team selected the Bellaforté Shake in a unique custom blend of three colors to top the sprawling four-story hotel.

The durable and low maintenance composite shake roofing has a natural hand-split cedar shake look with slanted sawn edges and staggered lengths. At a one-inch average tile thickness, Bellaforté Shake roofing tiles are reminiscent of jumbo cedar shakes on other structures on the Biltmore property.

An extra bonus for the developers of this project is that DaVinci polymer shake tiles have achieved a Class A Fire Rating and also resist impact resistance, moisture and algae growth. And, these eye-catching tiles add dimension to the designer roof that complements other buildings in the Antler Hill Village complex.

Adding Color to Lightweight Roofing Tiles on Colonial-Style Homes

0
0

Known for their symmetrical design, Colonial-style homes are a blank canvas waiting for color. That's the viewpoint of Kate Smith, chief color maven at Sensational Color.

"Two-, three- and four-color schemes are all possibilities for the exterior of a Colonial-style home," says Smith. "The right number and placement of colors depends on your personal preferences."

Designer RoofSmith, the author of the e-book FRESH Color Schemes for Your Home Exterior, encourages homeowners to adopt a "top down" color approach to create an attractive and unified home exterior. (see also Curb Appeal Starts with a DaVinci Tile Roof)

"Colonial-style homes typically have a slate roofs or a fake slate roof," says Smith. "Black or gray are generally associated with this home design, but you can find some blends of these colors if you work with a polymer roofing company like DaVinci Roofscapes.

"Because the roof of Colonial homes is usually a dark color, that means some 'brightness' is needed for the siding. Many Colonial-style homes are a stark white with accent colors for the trim, door and shutters. The siding can also be a softer cream color, warm gray or shade or beige."

To highlight different features of the home, Smith recommends using a burst of color on the front door of a Colonial-style home. "While black on a door or trim is a timeless, elegant look, many homeowners prefer to add their 'pop of color' on the door by using red, green or blue," says Smith. "Because the front door is usually a main focal point on the facade of a Colonial-style home, this is your chance to truly express your love of color. You can carry through that door color into your landscaping features quite easily."

Ohio Assisted Living Facility Gets Synthetic Slate Roofing

This is National Assisted Living Week --- a time to shine the spotlight on the facilities and people dedicated to helping people as they age or need special services.

Fake SlateAt DaVinci Roofscapes, we're tipping our hat to all those who help people in assisted living locations ... and those who will soon help others at new, "under construction" facilities that will have our plastic roofing materials overhead.

In Granville, Ohio, the Middleton of Granville complex will open in just a few weeks. This $18.3 million community includes 94 assisted living and memory care units plus lots of amenities. Atop the new single-story facility is an abundance of Bellaforté Slate Black polymer roofing.

"Our assisted living facility has a large footprint for a one-story building," says Jack Lucks, a founding partner with Continental Realty, the developer of the property. "Anything you can do to give depth to the roof on a project like ours is a benefit. The DaVinci tiles have the shadow lines and aesthetics we need for our facility."

The consistent single width of Bellaforté Slate tiles provides beauty to the property's roof with its clean, simple design. At a half-inch tile thickness, these simulated slate roofing tiles are twice the thickness of most other synthetic slates.

"DaVinci offered the look we needed to make our facility come together," says Lucks. Keep watching and we'll share pictures of the finished facility soon. Have you ever wondered what a color expert would tell you if you asked the question, "What order should I go in when selecting exterior colors for my home?"

According to Kate Smith, DaVinci Roofscapes' color expert, the correct order is roof, siding, windows, front door, trim then garage door. Unless the home is brick or stone, the largest fixed feature is probably the roof, so you will want to start there.

Nailing No-No's

0
0

"Oh no ... my contractor didn't read the instructions and used the wrong nails!"

Polymer RoofingThat was the bewildered cry of one Pacific Northwest homeowner recently. She knew something was wrong because she was starting to see "rust stains" on her fairly new DaVinci Roofscapes designer roof.

After a quick visit by one of DaVinci's technical experts, the reason was easy to determine --- her roofing installer had used framing nails instead of an appropriate 50-year fastener (seeStainless Steel Nails) to secure her composite roofing in place. There's no easy solution for this problem, so it's best to verify with your roofer beforehand that they're using stainless steel, or hot-dipped galvanized nails when installing DaVinci steep slope roofing tiles.

Here's another nailing no-no. Don't forget to nail down the bottom tab on both Bellaforte composite slate and synthetic shake roofing products. It's important to secure the tabs for a firm, confident installation that can help prevent damage from high winds and severe weather.

Finally, DaVinci Class A Fire Rated roofing tiles are thick and realistic-looking, so installers need to make sure to install our imitation slate and polymer shake tiles with a minimum 1-1/2" roofing nails. The nails must be long enough to penetrate through the roof deck and exceed it by 3/16". And, if you're in high wind areas, make sure to use ring-shank nails. Fake Cedar ShakeYou've heard it before: Honesty is the best policy.

That policy works for Scott Cunningham with Turner Morris, Inc. out of Colorado --- especially when it comes to talking about DaVinci Roofscapes sustainable roofing.

"DaVinci is a true stand alone in the synthetic world," says Cunningham. "I've been installing DaVinci for nine years and have never had any significant product issues. The product itself is durable and withstands the stringent demands of our high alpine environment."

For other installers in high elevations Cunningham has an installation tip. "Extra caution should be taken when switching traditional cedar shakes to synthetic cedar shake as their insulation value and breathability is very much different."

Which Needs Sunblock -- Maple Trees Or DaVinci Roofs?

0
0

source - stockfresh

The answer is maple tress. Are you surprised? I was when I read that while studying the fall color changes on trees plant researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison discovered that brilliant red pigments act like sunblock to shade sensitive leaf tissue during the fall when trees reabsorb nutrients from their leaves. The researchers explained, "Trees need to store as many of those nutrients as they can before the leaves drop." Basically the red pigment produced by the leaves performs much the same important function as sunscreen on human skin.

The outer leaves of maple trees are more colorful than shaded leaves inside the canopy and leaves on the north side. The maples and oaks in the cool but sunny Midwestern and New England states turn red, while European species such as the Norway maple do not produce the same brilliant red. The absence of red leaves is the result of the cloudier and warmer weather in these locations during fall. Therefore, these species don't need the protection of these pigments.

Unlike maple leaves the DaVinci Shake and Slate composite roofing have state-of-the-art ultraviolet and color stabilizers to help protect the rooftop color from fading in the sun. The roofing tiles resemble classic traditional slate and shake but require none of the maintenance. Modeled after actual slate and shake, the synthetic roof shingles are backed by a lifetime warranty and resist fire, impact, moisture, curling, cracking, fading, mold, algae, fungus and insects!

While you and your maple trees need to take care to block the sun your DaVinci roof needs no special care to keep it looking great.

Real Slate Versus Composite Slate Roofing

0
0

Spoiler Alert: real slate roofs are heavy. According to one slate roofing company, they estimate the weight of natural slate roofing as anywhere between 800 and 1,500 pounds per square.

Lightweight SlateThat type of weight means installation of slate roof tiles is a slow, heavy process. Each piece has to be individually taken to the roof and secured in place (by some very tired installers!). And, even more importantly, if you're going to have all that weight on a roof, you need to make sure your home's "bones" can handle that weight on its structure.

Enter DaVinci Roofscapes composite slate --- the lightweight roofing solution.

DaVinci offers a variety of manufactured slate options, including Multi-Width, Single-Width and Bellaforté Slate. These products weigh substantially less than natural slate materials, yet they're even more durable when it comes to impact resistance.

The lighter weight imitation slate means roofing installers can transport our lightweight roofing tiles up to the roof quicker, handle the product faster and install it in less time than real slate roofing materials. And, it means that the structural system of the home won't be compromised.

There's more. Unlike natural slate, imitation slate shingle's won't crack or break. Plus they have impact resistance and come in a wide array of colors.

This home's transformation going from shingles to a polymer slate tile roof is remarkable. The original roof, a brown shingle, wasn't doing justice to this brick home which is loaded with curb appeal. In order to make their (very steep) roof truly one of a kind, these homeowners decided to customize a blend using our multi-width simulated slate roofing tiles. The blend created is Dark Gray, Light Brown, Light Purple, Green Stone, Dark Stone and Light Violet.

What is the process for customizing a blend? Typically, a homeowner would work with a Project Specialist here in our office. Our Project Specialists offer a true service of color and product advice, many times viewing images of the home in order to make suggestions. We also have other tools to help, our online Color Designer can help narrow down the choices, and we are always willing to send out product samples in any color as well as color chips. Once colors and percentages are nailed down, sample bundles are requested for final approval by the end user and then an order can go into production. Like we do with our standard color blends, we pre-blend the tiles here in our factory so there is minimal sorting at the jobsite.

Faux Slate Roof

Baron Georgian Colonial

Hi,

We need a new roof and love the look of the DaVinci products! Our Georgian Colonial home is a light beige with green shutters. It sits on the end of a cul-de-sac so you see A LOT of roof as you drive up the road. Can you help us pick a good roof color and style? And we are open to changing our green shutters.

Thank you so much!

Christine Baron
Mahopac, NY
Product: Slate

**********************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Dear Ms. Baron,

I recommend the Bellaforté Slate for your home. It fits with the style of home. The size and pattern of the Bellaforté Slate will give your roof dimension without being too busy when you see a large portion of the roof as you approach the cul-de-sac.

To give you an updated look would go with a gray roof. From the photo it looks like the stone on your home has a fair amount of gray. Choose from Slate Gray-VariBlend or Smokey Gray-VariBlend depending on which one looks the best to you against your home. Either will look great so trust your judgment.

Polymer Slate RoofIf you'd like to keep with a brown roof the Brownstone-VariBlend would also be a good choice.

With either your can keep the shutters green or go with a new color. With either of the gray roof colors and light beige siding you can choose from just about any color family for your shutters. Black, green, brick red, even blue could all work. For your style home I'd look for a deep rich color that is slightly toned down, muted or grayed rather than bright, vibrant colors. These are often the types of colors you find in the historic color collections offered by most paint companies.

With the Brownstone roof you could go with a deep rich brown in a tone that blends with the roof, deep warm red, or maybe get a bit bold and try teal. Teal or blue could also be a nice front door color with a Brownstone roof.

I hope that helps you make the roof selection for your lovely home a little bit easier.

Sincerely,

Kate Smith

Do You Need a Roof Doctor?

0
0

You're feeling great, so why head to the doctor? The answer ... for a check-up to make sure you continue to feel great.

Roof DamageIt's the same for your roof. A yearly check-up can help your roof live a longer, healthier life. And, if you're roof isn't feeling well (the symptoms can include missing shingles or pock-marked tiles from roof hail damage) then the check-up will help you identify the problem and hopefully find the solution.

We have some roof system check-up tips to share with you from DaVinci Roofscapes.

First of all, if you have steep slope roofing or you're not sure how to evaluate your roof, then hire a professional. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) can provide you with a listing of professional roofers in your area along with additional information on how to check up on your wood shake roof or slate roof. (See NRCA a Resource for Roof Shoppers)

If you decide to do your own evaluation, then get out the binoculars and the ladder. Stand across the street or at a good vantage point with binoculars and carefully look at the condition of your roof. Or, you can get up on the ladder to inspect the roof.

Look for problem areas, such as missing or broken shingles, along with roofing tiles that may be “flapping” in the wind. These are indications that a new roof may be in your future.

Wood Shake RoofHere are a few extra tips:

- Check the sides of your roof. The southern exposure weathers significantly faster than the other sides of the roof, so make sure to carefully examine this one.

- Look closely at shallower pitched areas of your roof. These weather faster than steeper pitches. If your roof has a shallow pitch — like a shed dormer — make certain you can clearly see it to get a true indication of the condition of your roof.

For more ways to check up and check out your roof, visit Happy National Roofing Week!

What Would Your Friends Say About a New Lifetime Roof From DaVinci Roofscapes?

0
0

If you're in the market for a specific brand of a new car, computer, or even a refrigerator, you're likely to seek out a lifetime warranty and ask friends who own those products for their opinions. It's the same way with buying a new roof.

But, you may not know of any friends with a DaVinci Roofscapes polymer roof ... so let us introduce you to some new friends to hear what they have to say about our plastic roofing materials.

>>> Anthony Polotto, a registered roof consultant who works in the University Architects Office at Notre Dame, installed DaVinci composite slate on his own home after he was impressed by the installation of a composite slate roof from DaVinci on a campus project. "I actually recommend this roof to everyone I know," says Polotto. "The only drawback is this is an investment roof with a higher price tag. However, this is really no comparison to the value of this product, even with the most expensive asphalt on the market. I still have people drive by my home very slow to admire the roof ... and several people have even stopped to ask what type of roof it is. That makes me very proud!"

Imitation Slate

>>> Kim Butler had her DaVinci roof installed in combination with a steel roof on her Nebraska home last year. She's all smiles about her designer roof. "We are happy with our DaVinci roof and continue to receive great comments from those who see it," says Butler. "I think it's the combination of the steel with the DaVinci product that makes our roof unique. We would recommend the DaVinci product to others!"

Fake Shake

>>> Henry Bretthauer lives in Oregon and had his DaVinci synthetic slate roofing installed in 2013. "The spring rains wash the dirt off our roof and it looks like new again," says Bretthauer. "While our neighbors have to power wash their roof regularly to remove bird droppings, moss and mold, we just rely on Mother Nature to clean off our DaVinci roof!"

Home Exterior Color Trends: Go For The Gold

0
0

A slightly softened gold is emerging as an important color as we move into 2016 and it is a perfect color to use with gray as an accent color or main on a home exterior.

Gold gleams against DaVinci Slate

For the past few years warm gray has been thought of as the "new brown" but it is really more than just a replacement for brown. Besides do we really need to replace brown? I don't think so.

Gray is a timeless color that blends with most exterior home materials. A beautiful neutral color like gray can set the stage for creating a cohesive color scheme for your home exterior. Choose from light, dark or medium gray depending on the style of your home and the look you want. Light gray is an alternative to white or off-white as a choice for trim color against deeper gray or other toned down colors.

Dulux Paint named Cherished Gold as their 2016 Color of the Year. In announcing this as their top color for next year they had this to say about Cherished Gold,  "Still bright enough to attract attention while also subtly referring to the past and the color of the earth, it also combines well with other tones."

Gold looks lively with DaVinci Shake

Sherwin-Williams included Different Gold in their color trends forecast for 2016 saying it is a color the connects generations and is soulfully vintage.

Now getting back to brown. Your home will just about reach out and hug you when you mix the characteristics of gold with the warmth of a brown tone DaVinci shake. Who wants to come home to a home that feels like a warm hug? Everyone! That is why this combination remains a favorite and brown will never go out of style.

Church Tired of Replacing Copper Roofs

The cornerstone of the historic Emmanuel Episcopal Church in San Angelo, Texas was laid in 1887. Since that time the church has seen many changes. The most recent is the addition of an impact- and fire-resistant Multi-Width Slate polymer roof from DaVinci Roofscapes.

"The copper roofs on this church were destroyed twice by hail in the past 10 years," says Sam Colson, national restoration and construction estimator for Jim Filipowicz and Associates. "Church members came to us for a recommendation of a roofing product that would hold up against severe weather conditions and ideally replicate the slate look on the building when it was originally constructed. After doing product research and seeing the variety of selections available from DaVinci, we knew their composite slate product was the ideal solution."

Polymer SlateAfter contacting other churches across the country --- including in hail-prone areas --- the church grounds and building maintenance team at Emmanuel Episcopal Church made a presentation to church members to familiarize them with the polymer roofing material. "With its warranties and the quality of the product, we all knew we were making a decision not just for our current situation, but for those who will follow after us," says Ski Lisewsky, a junior warden at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

The church leadership selected an Aberdeen blend of five colors to complement the stone exterior on the historic church. The eye-catching blend of imitation slate tiles includes dark gray, light brown, dark purple, green stone and dark stone colors.

"We saw many samples of colors available from DaVinci," says Lisewsky. "With our stone texture there was no doubt that the Aberdeen blend was the best look for what we were trying to achieve. When the sun hits the church at the right time, with the colors of the garden and all the colors of the Aberdeen roofing, it looks just wonderful."

According to Lisewsky, there has been nothing but praise for the synthetic slate roofing selection. Both congregation members and local residents have complimented the new roof.

"This went from a sad situation of our copper roof being declared a total loss by the insurance company to an exciting change for our church," says Lisewsky. "The JFA team was great to work with. They kept us informed every step of the way. From start to finish, we're pleased with this project, the product and the people involved in helping us acquire this new roof."
