One-of-a-Kind Synthetic Roofing Material

How do you know a roofing company really believes in the polymer roofing product they install? When they put it on their own company headquarters!

TASK Construction did just that ... they installed DaVinci Roofscapes composite shake roofing on their Leawood, Kansas headquarters building in late 2015. According to company president Jake Kaminski, they selected a Bellaforté Shake in a Mountain-VariBlend to perfectly accent their building exterior.

Fake Cedar ShakeQ: Your company headquarters already had a standing seam metal roof on it that was in good condition. So, why replace it with simulated shake roofing?

A: We decided to update the look of our office building with a material that has proven long-term sustainability. We love the realistic aesthetics and curb appeal of the DaVinci product and we believe this composite shake roof brings positive attention to our place of business.

Q: TASK has offices in six major markets throughout the U.S. and you've completed almost 100 DaVinci roof installations in various regions of the country. What keeps you coming back to DaVinci lightweight roofing solutions?

A: DaVinci is a one-of-a-kind roofing product that is unmatched in functionality and aesthetics. We have never experienced a repair call after installation or witnessed any type of defective manufacturing. Our crews are enthusiastic about installing this synthetic roofing material. We're proud of our commitment to surpass expectations in every project we complete. Whether on a residential or commercial project, the curb appeal of the DaVinci product speaks for itself and helps us achieve this goal.

Q: What would you tell your friends and family members if they asked you about DaVinci products?

A: I would confidently tell them that DaVinci Roofscapes is the last roofing system they'll ever have to put on their homes ... then I'd point to our headquarters roof and show them that we believe in the product so much we put it on our building!

The Power Of Color On Your Home Exterior

March is a month for celebrating color! The International Colour Association has named March 21st as International Colour Day dedicated to understanding color - one of the most influential phenomena in our lives. It is also Color Therapy Month dedicated to celebrating the healing power of color.

International Colour Day and Color Therapy Month

According to Color Therapy Month founder Eleyne-Mari (a color therapist and director of Aura House School of Color and Light), March was selected for Color Therapy Month because it typically conjures thoughts of colorful rainbows and the color green, which represents prosperity, good health, renewal and growth.

Marking both the beginning of spring and International Colour Day March 21st seems a perfect time to think about color in relation to your home because this is the time of year when many of us start putting together our plans for what we will do to improve our home exteriors.

To celebrate the power of color how about some "color therapy" for your home? With the focus on green this month together with the fact that natural greens are on trend I thought it would be a great time to share some of my favorites ways to had green's power of prosperity, well-being, and renewal to your home. As always I like to look at color from the top down.

If I suggested green for your roof you might think about the bright green metal of a farmhouse and cringe at the thought. No need to think I'm asking you to jump into the color deep end. Take a look at these gorgeous and environmentally friendly roofs from DaVinci Roofscapes in Weathered Green and Evergreen Variblend. Now we're talking green roofing options that even a color-shy person can love.

DaVinci Multi-Width Synthetic Slate Shingles Weathered Green
DaVinci Multi-Width Slate Weathered Green

Bellaforté Fake Slate Evergreen Variblend
Bellaforté Slate Evergreen-VariBlend

You could also add copper accents on your exterior that as they age the patina turns them a lovely shade of green called verdigris.

If you prefer a green that you think is too dark or too vibrant to be used as a main color on your home consider using it as an accent color. Green can be a good choice as a complement to brick or to add life to neutral siding or stained wood.

And of course you can always use green as the main color on your home exterior. When you think about color therapy for your home (aka updating your exterior) think about green as a way to help you use the power of color to bring even more prosperity and well-being into your home.

Not All Synthetic Slate Roofing Tiles Are the Same

The brand of synthetic roofing you select does make a difference. That's what some Missouri homeowners recently discovered. After having a different roofing product on their home, they experienced hail damage and deterioration, making it necessary for them to get a new roof.

"The poor quality and brittle nature of the roofing material on the home made our customers skeptical about investing in another composite roofing product," says Rob Orf, owner of Delta Exteriors in St. Louis. "However, once they started talking with us and saw the durability of the DaVinci Roofscapes imitation slate tiles, they were convinced.

"These homeowners loved the realistic look of the DaVinci Single-Width Slate tiles. The long, lifetime limited warranty and the proven history of DaVinci put their minds at ease."

To add distinction to their new polymer slate roof, the family chose the European-VariBlend that combines four colors on the roof  --- Light Gray, Medium Gray, Dark Gray and Dark Purple.

"The color options and blends were perfect for this project and just what the homeowners were looking for to enhance their home's appearance," says Orf. "With the high quality of DaVinci craftsmanship, knowledgeable sales reps, and the ability to work with our trusted roofing crew at Delta Exteriors, these homeowners are extremely happy to have their home protected for a lifetime with a DaVinci designer roof."

What a difference the right roofing contractor can make. Just ask homeowner Bruce Granger. After experiencing headaches trying to find the best roofer for his Fort Worth, Texas home, he finally discovered the team at Showtime Exteriors in Mansfield, Texas.

"One of the best aspects of working with Showtime Exteriors is their professionalism," says Granger. "They were eager to make us comfortable and happy with our roofing project from start to finish. The Showtime Exteriors team did a great job on our reroofing project. I'd feel confident in recommending their services to my family and friends."

Granger feels equally satisfied with his decision to invest in synthetic slate roofing from DaVinci Roofscapes. He selected Bellaforté Slate in a Slate Gray color for his Tudor-style home.

"We love the look of our Bellaforté Slate polymer roof and the incredible Lifetime Limited Materials Warranty that DaVinci Roofscapes provided to us," says Granger. "When we were looking for a roof, we were impressed by the many features of the DaVinci  Roofscapes products, such as the resistance to impact, hail and fire. Now that we have the roof on our home, we're even more impressed that those features come with a roof that looks so good on our house!"

Getting Your Roof Ready for Spring

$

Snow may still be piled up, but now is the time to think about getting your roof ready for warmer weather.

It's especially important to examine your roof and gutters once Springtime weather arrives. The experts at DaVinci Roofscapes remind you that harsh winter weather can damage a roof in many ways ... and you want your roof in solid shape before Springtime storms begin.

Ice DamStart inside your home --- in the attic. Examine the ceiling and walls carefully in all areas of the attic. Look for water trails, dark spots, leaks or other signs that the roof may not be holding up. Also look for sagging drywall, cracks, mold, mildew and peeling paint --- all signs that the roof may have a leak.

On the outside of your home, look carefully at your roof from a good vantage point with a pair of binoculars. If you see a missing or dislocated roof shingles, that needs to get fixed quickly. Then, check your gutters to make sure they're still firmly secured or if ice dam buildup weakened them in any way.

You should also look inside your gutters for granules that may have come off asphalt shingles in the winter. If you find a lot of granules, flush out the gutters and downspouts with a garden hose to remove the debris, and then look again at your roofing tiles to make sure they're still in good shape.

Weather damageSpring roof maintenance is a good time to call in the professionals. A yearly inspection by a roofing contractor who is trained to look for worn out areas, leaks and problem tiles, is well worth the investment. And, this is especially true if you live in an area prone to strong storms during the upcoming months that could include microbursts, hail, winds and severe rain.

A professional roofer will assess your roof and also look for signs of mold and algae. At the same time he'll be able to look under eaves and overhangs for signs of water damage from leaks and check out your flashing.

For almost 20 years CMR Construction & Roofing has delivered personalized service and expert installation on numerous projects throughout the country. During the past four years, at least 100 of those residential projects --- plus quite a few commercial projects --- have included the addition of polymer roofing from DaVinci Roofscapes.

Polymer Slate"We keep coming back to DaVinci composite roofing because it's a superior product and an easy sell to a potential client," says Danny McCloud, general manager of CMR Construction & Roofing. "Once they commit to the imitation slate or synthetic shake and see the DaVinci product on their home, they love it.

"With DaVinci it's hard to tell the difference between a real slate tile roof and their composite slate roof. Most homeowners love the look and the color options available to them from DaVinci. This designer roof really brings character to their home."

McCloud has found that DaVinci synthetic roofing material works especially well for people who have experienced storm or hail damage. (See also Contractors "Hail" DaVinci Roofscapes)

"When slate, tile or wood shake homes are damaged by storms, it's easy to show the homeowner what DaVinci can offer," says McCloud. "People appreciate that DaVinci offers a lifetime limited warranty, the tiles looks authentic and can easily resist impact. They really like the idea of never having to go through the same headaches again to get their roofs replaced as a result of severe weather!"

Have you ever wondered what a color expert would tell you if you asked the question, "What order should I go in when selecting exterior colors for my home?"

According to Kate Smith, DaVinci Roofscapes' color expert, the correct order is roof, siding, windows, front door, trim then garage door. Unless the home is brick or stone, the largest fixed feature is probably the roof, so you will want to start there.

Demystifying Snow Guards

$

0

What are those funny-looking "things" that poke up from rooftops in some areas of the country? They're snow guards --- and their function is to break apart snow as it melts so that snow masses don't come "avalanching down" on walkways and landscaping.

SnowguardsThere's a science to adding snow guards to a home or commercial structure in snow-prone areas. To understand the process better, we asked Lars Walberg, president of Rocky Mountain Snow Guards, to walk us through the steps.

"First we look at a roof diagram for the building, either an aerial picture of an existing structure or architectural drawings of a new structure," says Walberg. "We ask the customer to identify areas over driveways, walks, dog runs, decks and other key 'traffic' locations. Then we design a snow guard system to help protect those eaves and areas from snow slides."

The science behind the operation comes in determining how many snow guards to specify, at which locations and to determine the snow load and retention.

"We've calculated and designed a number of different patterns of snow guards that are effective for different situations," says Walberg, whose company supplies snow guards for homes and buildings all across the country. "Steeper roofs, longer runs and the lower coefficient of friction of the roof covering all play a part in determining how many, what placement pattern and what snow guard will be most effective."

There's even more science involved. According to Walberg, placement distance of the snow guards from the eaves of the roof is a function of "eave to peak distance, pitch and snow load." Plus, there are different considerations if you're installing snow guards with synthetic shake roofing versus synthetic slate shingles.

"We're specifying a job in Minnesota right now with Bellaforté Shake from DaVinci Roofscapes," says Walberg. "For that project an RG10 snow guard is most effective because it has a larger and higher pad face. If the same house had Bellaforté Slate roofing, we'd most likely specify the SnowTrapper ST9 product because they're a lower profile snow guard and work well with the Bellaforté Slate product."

The Switch: Cedar Roofing to Synthetic Slate Shingles

Challenge: California residents faced losing their homeowner insurance if they didn't replace their deteriorating cedar roof shingles.

Solution: A new roof style with imitation slate shingles that met the needs of the insurance company. Resistant to fire, high winds and severe weather, the DaVinci Roofscapes simulated slate roofing transformed the couple's home.

Polymer Roof TilesHomeowner Insights:

“Our biggest change was that we wanted to move away from the shake roof and move to a slate that we thought fit the style of the house better,” says Dr. Mike Boone, a part-time resident of Cayucos, Calif. “But, we didn’t want the hassle, weight and expense of real slate.

“We wanted a roof with some interest to it, not just one tedious color. Also, we needed a roof color combination that would not show sea salt spray or seagull poop. The subtleness of the colors we selected blended well together. We liked the blend of the roof colors so much that they inspired us to select exterior siding and accent colors to complement it."

Boone and his wife Andrea decided to create a custom color blend for the roof of their "Carmel Cottage" style home. They selected a DaVinci Multi-Width Slate roof in a stunning color combination that includes Slate Black and Slate Gray with highlight colors blended in of Light Green and Dark Green. (SeeHomeowners Create Their Own DaVinci Roofing Color Blends) Now their insurance concerns are a thing of the past and they're enjoying the synthetic slate roofing on their home.

“Cayucos is a walking town," says Boone. "We get comments on our roof on a daily basis from people strolling by. The roof is a focal point of the house and we are extremely happy with the decisions we made on all the colors and products that make up our ‘new’ older home.”

Going Grayer --- Popular Shades of Gray Roofing

From sizzling book titles to whales to the hair of famous actors, the color gray has never been more popular. That's especially true in the roofing industry.

"Gray is a classic, timeless color, so it's really no surprise that the color gray is an essential element in the home exterior palette," says Kate Smith, chief color maven at Sensational Color. "Gray is a color with historic roots that is at home on a beach bungalow or a stately mansion. Shades of gray continue to increase in popularity because of the color's widespread appeal. (See Going Gray on Top)

Gray Slate  Polymer Slate

"The color gray reflects the finer things in life, a respect for history, and a love of colors that are as complex as we are. Gray tones are mysterious in many ways ... especially in how they can both 'carry' a color scheme or sit back and serve as a bolster to other colors."

According to Smith, architects and home builders lean on the color gray to unify diverse materials and textures both inside and outside the home. "There's almost no home exterior that wouldn't work with a gray roof," says Smith. "Perhaps that's why Slate Gray is the repeat number one best seller in polymer slate and shake roofing products at DaVinci Roofscapes."

Roofing: Learning a New Language

$

Blank stares. That's what can happen if you talk to a roofer and don't know the language he's speaking.

Just like standing in a different country trying to speak English to someone who only speaks Chinese, it can be hard to communicate if you and your roofer aren't speaking the same language.

And, you need to know this new language ... so you can effectively communicate and understand what's happening with your roof.

To make it easier for you and your roofing contractor to communicate, the team at DaVinci Roofscapes has put together this handy "translation guide" of roofing terms for you.

  • Tile: A roof tile may be curved or flat piece of baked (at times glazed) clay or a synthetic material. It is the basic block used to cover your roof that you see from the street.
  • Underlayment: It may be any sheet material which is installed in between the roof system and the roof deck. Besides helping in the separation of the two, underlayment also gives secondary protection against potential weather damage.
  • Hip: A sloping ridge that forms the junction between two slopes on a part of the roof that comes out at a separate angle from the main section of the roof.
  • Ridge: A horizontal line formed by two surfaces at the top of a roof where two slopes meet. Basically, it's the peak of a sloped roof.
  • Rake: The inclined edge of the roof which is adjacent to the first rafter of the wall.
  • Vent: An opening in the building designed mainly for the passage of air, water vapor, heat or other gases.
  • Fascia: A face, band, or a flat board which is located at the outer edge of the cornice.
  • Valley: The angle generated by the intersection of the two sliding roof surfaces.
  • Gable: A triangular area that lies directly beneath the sloping roof.
  • Flashing: Metal pieces used as roof joints to protect against water leakage.

Jesse James Slept Here

What do the famous outlaw Jesse James and DaVinci Roofscapes have in common? A connection with St. Mary's Catholic Church in Independence, Missouri.

Founded in 1823, Saint Mary's is one of the oldest churches in the Dioceses of Kansas City - Saint Joseph. The current church was constructed in 1865, with an impressive 10-story high steeple added in 1900. In 2015 that tall steeple --- plus the rest of the church --- was re-roofed using DaVinci polymer roofing tiles.

While steeplejacks with Inspired Heights installed multi-width faux slate tiles on the tall steeple, another roofing company tackled the massive installation of the main roof on St. Mary's church. DaVinci Single-Width Slate was selected to replace hail-damaged roofing shingles.

"Our church history includes many notable milestones," says Rev. Matthew Bartulica. "One of the most popular pieces includes how Father Kennedy harbored an injured outlaw in the church in the 1860s --- Jesse James.

"Now we're starting a new chapter in our history. Our old, deteriorated roof is gone and now we're very pleased to have the DaVinci slate roofing products overhead."

A Special Roof for a Special Collections Building

Time really does move quickly. It's already been five years since the Special Collections Libraries building at the University of Georgia was constructed.

Fake SlateIt's here on this sprawling southern campus that unique and extraordinary materials are preserved and organized related to the history and culture of Georgia. There are rare books, manuscripts and other collections inside this 110,000-square-foot climate-controlled structure. The building also includes classroom and exhibit space.

On the top of this impressive 90-foot tall building you'll find a Slate Gray polymer slate roof manufactured by DaVinci Roofscapes and installed by Bone Dry Roofing of Athens, Georgia. (See Valore Slate Tops UGA Special Collections Libraries Building)

The brick and limestone veneer building sits proudly on the UGA campus ... as if it had always been there. Collins Cooper Carusi Architects, Inc. planned it that way. The building was constructed on top of a 28,000-square-foot records vault that is located 35 feet below the finish floor. After a challenging construction process, the building --- and its impressive synthetic slate roof --- are now firmly entrenched on the college grounds.

Custom Blend - Fired Brick RedDesign Opportunity - This question doesn't come up often, but from time to time I am asked if our eco friendly roof tiles can be used when the homeowner will be collecting rainwater. I was asked this for the first time a few years ago while working with a client on a project in the US Virgin Islands. It would be a complete deal breaker if the rain water collected off the roof could not be used for irrigation, laundry, bathing and drinking.

Design Solution - DaVinci Roofscapes' lightweight roofing materials are suitable systems to be used if you plan on collecting rainwater for your private use. Of course we recommend sticking to the recommendation that the EPA makes regarding the safe collection and use of harvested rainwater. Check out the picture of the finished roof from the above mentioned conversation. The windy month is here! Which is why March is probably also celebrated as National Kite Month. But, did you know that March is also National Noodle Month, Mad for Plaid Month and Dolphin Awareness Month?

Polymer Slate RoofAt DaVinci Roofscapes, we marked our calendars for March 6-12, which is Women in Construction Week. And, since we are a Made in America company, we like to celebrate the third week of March, which is National Manufacturing Week.

Although some of us might not admit it, our calendars are also marked for some very fun dates to remember in March, such as Sock Monkey Day on the 5th, International Fanny Pack Day on the 12th and World Marbles Day on the 25th.  And, as a last farewell to winter weather, we're looking forward to Snowman Burning Day on the 20th!

Of course, March also has some very serious dates to remember. March 13 is Daylight Savings Time and Easter falls early this year on March 27. The Ides of March are on the 15th ... and the oftentimes not-so-serious St. Patrick's Day is on the 17th.

Finally ... our absolute favorite March date is the 26th.  That's "Make Up Your Own Holiday Day."  So, we're declaring March 26 as "I Love My Polymer Roof Day." Sick of Cedar Shakes

$

It doesn't take much to fall "out of love" with a product you thought would be great for your home long-term.

Broken sprinkler heads on a lawn irrigation system. Windows that let in moisture and continually fog up. An entry door that never closes "just right" so you're always feeling chilly drafts.

Real cedar shake roofing falls into that same category.  While a wood shake roof may look good when it's first installed, it doesn't take long to fall out of love with it. Why? Because real cedar shakes can deteriorate quickly. They welcome bug infestations and the shakes can warp and curl. All of which mean constant maintenance headaches.

If you want to stay in love with a cedar roof, make the smart choice and select composite shake roofing. Made of fire- and impact-resistant polymers, simulated shake roofing from DaVinci Roofscapes resists insects, warping and curling ... and it doesn't fade like real cedar shake roofing.

Designer Roof

At DaVinci, we offer you four different synthetic shake roofing options to perfectly complement your home ...and your wallet:

> DaVinci Multi-Width Shake: Available in 9", 8", 7", 6" and 4" widths that can be installed in a non-repeating fashion in either a straight or staggered pattern. A deep 5/8" profile has both wavy and straight grains throughout the blend to create enviable shadow lines.

> DaVinci Single-Width Shake: 9" shake alternative tiles resemble hand-split cedar shake roofing. The 5/8" profile deepens shadow lines replicate real cedar roofing.

> Bellaforté Shake: The 12" tile width with multiple profiles simulates a multi-width, staggered rough hewn wood shake. And, at 1" average tile thickness, Bellaforté Shake designer roof tiles are reminiscent of natural jumbo shakes.

> Fancy Shake: With a clean, smooth look replicating machine-sawn shake, these 7/16" thick shake shingles provide a polished beauty for your roof. Available in 12", 7" and 5" widths with bundles arriving at the job site pre-sorted by color and size, eliminating on-site sorting and guesswork.
