Basic Roof Components

0
0

The many roofing components can be confusing to home and building owners. By knowing the different terminologies contractors use, you can actively participate in your own project. This helps to reduce delay and improves communication on both sides so that the entire project details are fully understood from start to finish. Below are definitions of some basic roof components and important details you might need to know not only during the roof bidding process but also during the installation process:

Cedar Shake AlternativeDecking: This section acts as the base on which the entire roofing system is supported and on which is it laid (well, the underlayment goes on top of the deck and then the shingles go on top of the underlayment).

Underlayment: Sheets of material that are installed between the roof system and roof deck to prevent water damage caused by rain, hail, snow and high humidity. These sheets are known as the underlayment and also act as a separator between the roof and the deck.

Flashing: Water leakage is a serious problem on roofs that are not installed with the right angle or with the right materials. Flashing are metal pieces used to divert water from problem areas.

Vent: An opening in the building designed mainly for the passage of air, water vapor, heat or other gases.

Polymer Roof Tiles: These are sometimes referred to as plastic tiles or composite tiles. Our fake cedar roofing imitates hand-split or machine-sawn shakes.

These are just some of the basic components you will hear when talking to your contractor about your roofing project. What other terms have you heard that have been confusing during the roofing process? Can we help answer your questions?

DaVinci Offers Energy Star Qualified Products – Ask Us About Them!

Energy StarDid you know that our DaVinci EcoBlend lightweight roofing systems are an ENERGY STAR® Qualified Product?

According to the ENERGY STAR® website, "ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency." The environment is very important to us. Because roofs are necessary and sometimes need to be replaced, as a roofing manufacturer we have to be thinking of sustainability and the environment when it comes to the production of our products.

Our EcoBlend tiles reflect sunlight and therefore heat away from the property the roof is protecting. This higher emissivity reflectivity rate reduces the cooling load which increases energy efficiency. In addition to helping reduce energy bills, our EcoBlend tiles also help cut down on pollution caused by energy production.

If you are interested in taking advantage of our ENERGY STAR Qualified Products, here are the colors you can choose from:

  • EcoBlend Weathered Gray (in Medium, Medium Light, Medium Dark, Light and Dark)
  • EcoBlend Gray (in Dark, Light and Medium)

What are some of the ENERGY STAR products that you like? Do you get discounts from your city or state for using ENERGY STAR products? We want to hear about them. Let's discuss this in the comments below!

Colorful “Safari Home” Features Custom DaVinci Roof

Inspired by their love of warm earth-tone colors and touches of safari-themed items found inside their home, Jack and Angie Craig transformed the outside of their colonial-style house with stand-out paint colors and a custom-color roof design created by DaVinci Roofscapes and Epic Exteriors.

Designed to have a “European Cobblestone” feeling, four earthy colors of polymer roofing tiles staggered on the Craig’s roof create an inspiring pattern. By using a custom blend of Light Clay, Medium Light Autumn, Medium Autumn and Black, the homeowners were able to make an exterior design statement with their roof and work “from the top down” to add color to their home.

“We had 49 roofing colors to choose from with DaVinci and got very creative to come up with the exact custom color blend we thought would complement our house,” says Angie Craig of Westwood Hills, Kansas. “The new roof replaced a solid black asphalt shingle roof and motivated us to get rid of the boring white paint on our home. We replaced it with a stunning golden amber paint and then added new black accent trim to match the new rounded black gutters. The newly-installed shutters and doors have unique wrought iron elements incorporated into them. This was really a full house transformation!”

Bellis and his team removed three layers of old asphalt shingles (more than 1,000 pounds per square) and the original wood roof layer. With the blank canvas of the roof to fill, the Epic Exteriors workers then installed the colorful Multi-Width Slate roofing tile to get the look desired by the Craigs.

“Seeing this dream come to life for the Craigs was exciting,” says Bellis, a DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor program member. “Our team has installed many DaVinci roofs in the Kansas City area, but this was truly the most creative use of color we’ve been involved with so far. As each row of the slate tiles were put in place you could see the vision Angie and Jack had turn into reality.”

According to Craig, all of her home’s elements lean toward the eclectic side, from the exterior shutters to the interior rugs. “We wanted to add more pizzazz and interest to our home and the colorful DaVinci roof was the perfect starting place to achieve our goal,” says Craig. “Not a day goes by that a neighbor doesn’t stop in awe at what we’ve achieved on the exterior of our home. And, in our minds, it all starts at the roof with the color and excitement flowing downwards from there!”

Don't Forget Snowguards - Even in the Summer!

DaVinci Roof with SnowguardChances are in these nice spring months you've been outside in your yard - doing a little "spring cleaning" of your shrubs, planting flowers and more. You may have noticed the damage that the heavy snow tumbling off your roof did to your shrubs over the winter. You might also wonder how to prevent that from occurring again next year.

Your answer is snowguards.

Snowguards are metal ledges, if you will, that help hold snow in place, so that it melts slowly and doesn't avalanche off your roof onto bushes, cars or anything else that might be below. If you are considering a new roof, be sure you include snowguards.

Did you know that snowguards can be easily retrofitted on an existing DaVinci luxury roof? Another advantage of our plastic roofing materials - it is really easy to have a professional roofer retrofit snowguards onto your roof.

Do you have a DaVinci roof with snowguards? Which kind did you choose? How are they working out for you?  Tell us more about your experience with snowguards in the comments below.

From the Architect's Corner - Customizing Color Blends

After nine years of working at DaVinci Roofscapes, I can really appreciateall of our colors blends and their differences. On the right house with the right color scheme, they can all look awesome. But often times customizing a blend is what needs to be done to ensure the homeowner is 100% happy with a roof that they have to live with for the next 50 years.

Recently, I have been working with an architect on a residential project in Colorado. After looking at both our slate and shake and all colors available, they decided they want shakes in green. Our green colors are typically found in Evergreen or Verde (and consisting of light, medium and dark green) which are traditionally slate blends, but plugging a slate color into the shake mold - no problem! We can't wait to see the end result!

Happy Friday, Architects and I hope to see you at the AIA Show next week!

Roof Type: Gable & Hip

As we continue on our roof design journey, here are a few more to cover - a hip roof and a gable roof. Do you have a hip or a gable roof? Did you buy your home because of your roof line? Your roof line plays an important role in the character of your home and so does the roofing materials that you put on top of that roof line.

According to Wikipedia, a hip roof is "a type of roof where all sides slope downwards to the walls, usually with a fairly gentle slope."  Whereas, a gable roof is "generally triangular portion of a wall between the edges of a sloping roof."

DaVinci products can be applied to many roofs types including gable and hip roofs as seen below in the the following photos.

Here is an example of a hip roof with DaVinci imitation slate tiles:

Here is an example of a gable roof with DaVinci's fake slate:

Bellaforte by DaVinci – Engineered to Withstand High Winds

0
0

Our Bellaforté tiles are some of the most advanced roofing tiles on the market. These tiles have all the appearance and beauty of natural slate or shake roofing tiles but with a higher level of durability from the proprietary-engineered polymer roofing formula. Although the tiles look complex, their installation and final appearance on the roof is not complicated at all.

See that little tab on the lower right hand side of the shingle? That tab helps to interlock to the next tile - and the "gutter" Bellaforte Slateon the left hand side of the tile is used to also interlock to the next existing tile. This snap-fit system and leading edge tab secures every tile to increase wind performance. What this means for the roof owner is that you have a greater wind resistance due to the fact that the tiles are so tightly put together.

Whether or not you live in a wind prone area, you might be interested in checking out our Bellaforté products. In addition to high wind ratings, these tiles also have a Class 4 impact rating and a Class A fire rating (with proper underlayment). These tiles come in two profiles - an imitation slate and a cedar shake alternative.

Have you installed Bellaforté tiles on your roof? We want to see it!  Please share your DaVinci roofing experience with us - be sure to include photos so we can share them on our blog!

5 Ways For Your Home To Make A Great First Impression

0
0

When Will Rogers said, "You never get a second chance to make a good first impression" he wasn't talking about his home but he certainly could have been.

According to a national homeowner study sponsored by DaVinci Roofscapes and conducted online by Harris Interactive, nearly all homeowners (88 percent) see the exterior of their home as a whole. It is the big picture not the individual parts that the research found was important to homeowners. In short, the style of home and how it looks on the property are the most attention-grabbing features of a home. Here are five ways you can make sure your home grabs the right kind of attention and makes a great first impression.

An inviting entry is essential to making a good first impression. Even if the rest of the exterior needs freshening up make sure to always keep your entry welcoming. It can take the focus off of tired trim and less-than-perfect paint. The front door offers you the most flexibility in color choice and it is a good place to let your personality to shine through.

Since the front door is the item on a home that offers homeowners the most flexibility in color choice, it is a good place for their personality to shine through. So here is my just-for-fun, non-scientific assessment of what your front door color says about you. - See more at: http://blog.davinciroofscapes.com/blog/color-from-the-top-down/what-the-color-of-your-front-door-says-about-you#sthash.lTjJam9T.dpuf

Your colors should blend with the home's surroundings.  This is an especially effective place to begin thinking about your color scheme when building or renovating a home in a wooded or natural setting where it is more important that the structure works well within nature rather than a neighborhood.reflect the landscape. Consider the shrubs and trees when shopping for a color.

In picking a color, keep in mind the color character of your neighborhood. If you're in a beachfront community where bright pastels are the norm then lemon yellow could be a good choice. If all the houses on your block are beige or gray, painting your house hot pink will make it stand out for the wrong reasons. When choosing your colors always ask yourself, "Will the new colors allow my home to stand out while still fitting into my neighborhoods?"

When putting together your exterior color scheme, don't forget the roof. The roof is often a big part of what you see when looking at the front of a home. Your roof can make a statement. While people often think of gray as a safe choice it may not give your home the best look. A color that complements your exterior can come from a whole range of colors. Not bright reds or greens but rather subtle colors that look like they were plucked right from nature.

An overall scheme that recognizes the importance of understanding your regional preferences, style of your home, neighborhood requirements and the elements of your home that don't often change like your brick or stone. Not sure where to begin? My free ebook FRESH Exterior Color: 5-Steps To Finding The Perfect Color For Your Home is a great place to begin. Use DaVinci to Restore Your Historic Roof

DaVinci SlateStructures that have historic significance often require specific materials to preserve their timeless beauty and historic architecture. Consequently, not just any paint, foundation, framing, roof or accent will do. Roofing can be particularly challenging when it comes to historic buildings. The design features, slope and details must not be compromised. Whether you have a museum, university, church or historic monument to renovate, DaVinci plastic roofing materials will match the textures, hues and character of any historic roof. Our materials coordinate so perfectly, that you’ll hardly believe you replaced the old roof!

All of our products are lightweight so your contractor won’t need to conduct elaborate structural analysis to consider any extra load the new roof will add to the existing structure. This means more savings for you and quicker renovation time. You can confidently select from our slate and shake products knowing you are getting the best materials in the industry.

Another excellent feature with DaVinci Roofscapes materials is their energy efficiency. Many historic buildings were not built with a “green concept” in mind and as a result use a considerable amount of energy. When you renovate with DaVinci green roofing materials, you are choosing a material that has a long service life and that is energy efficient. All of our products are 100% recyclable so you won’t have to worry about excessive disposal costs. With our 50-year warranty, the historic beauty of many buildings is preserved for longer period of time without showing signs of wear and tear. This means less maintenance costs and less disruption during the life-cycle of the building.

Dressing Up Roofs in Scotland

0

If you're looking to add a new polymer slate roof to your home and wish to add Old-World accents, consider the ornate decorations the Scottish add to their roofs.

While certainly not appropriate for all homes and structures in our country, the wrought iron railings and decorative accents incorporated into these buildings adds a unique charm and elegance. Less ornate applications could make a home in the United States a show-stopper!

Inspiring and unique, the roofs in Scotland are generally made of older slate. Fraught with the problems of algae and deterioration, the Scottish could certainly benefit from incorporating polymer slate tiles into replacement roofs!

Polymer Slate - How Does It Compare to the Real Thing?

0
0

Imitation Slate ShinglesYou might not even be aware that there is such a thing called, "Polymer Slate". What is that anyway?  Polymer imitation slate tiles are roofing tiles that are made out of a virgin resins (more or less a plastic) and molded to look like natural slate roofing tiles. However, while these tiles are made to look like natural slate, the performance of the tiles is quite different. Here are some of the main differences between polymer slate and natural slate:

  • Lightweight - DaVinci's Slate is very lightweight and therefore can replace even the lightest of roofing materials. In other words, you don't have to beef up your roof's structure in order for it to handle the weight of DaVinci. The lightweight factor also comes into play when you talk about overall cost of transportation of the material, labor costs in transportation to and from your job site and to and from the ground to the roof.

  • Multi-Width - DaVinci Slate comes in multi-widths (we do have some Slate products that don't - if you prefer that) whereas natural slate requires cutting of the tiles to get them to be those perfect sizes.

  • Waste - There is very little waste with DaVinci imitation slate, however with natural slate, tiles can crack and break as they are being hauled to the job site, being installed or being walked on. This is one factor that can increase the material cost for natural slate.

  • Color Blends - DaVinci's Polymer Slate comes in color blends that are job-site ready - pre-collated and ready to go.  Whereas, if you wanted a multi-colored slate roof, you would be paying much more for labor, as the roofers would have to lay it out on site.

Do you have a DaVinci polymer slate roofs? Were you debating on whether or not to go with natural slate or DaVinci? What made you pick DaVinci? Share your project with us here.

California’s Mai-Kai Condos Stand Out with New DaVinci Multi-Width Shake Roofing

Waterfront living was never so easy. The residents of the Mai Kai condo community in Newport Beach, Calif. enjoy water views and a low-maintenance roof overhead.

The 34 units, which are exposed to constant salt air and sea spray from the Pacific Ocean, were just re-roofed with polymer shake roofing tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes. Originally built in the early 1960’s, the Mai Kai condos are in the prestigious Corona Del Mar area of Newport Beach and each unit sells for between two and three million dollars. The homeowners association board selected the DaVinci Multi-Width Shake roofing tiles in a Mountain blend of colors, including light, medium and dark mountain tones to replace deteriorating wood shake shingles.

“Our research and the recommendation of a design consultant led us to the DaVinci product for its appearance, durability and maintenance,” says John Adler, a member of the Mai-Kai condo board of directors. “We needed a material that could be walked on by various trades people who would need access to the roof in the future. The strength of the product really impressed us and helped influence our decision.”

“Based on our experience so far with the product, I’d recommend the polymer slate or shake roofing tiles from DaVinci to another community if they had the same needs we did. Our experience has been positive with the product selection and installation, and we expect long-term satisfaction from this roofing product.”

How To Get Your Colors Approved By Your HOA: Quickly and Easily

0
0

You bought it. You love it. You keep it looking great. So why does someone else get a say in the color of your paint, door, deck or polymer roof? Many of the millions of Americans living in a community governed by homeowners associations (HOA) have found themselves asking that question.

If asked before you’ve painted your home or installed that gorgeous new roof – great question. After the fact, it may just be the beginning of a headache. To keep you from having to reach for a bottle of aspirin here are a few tips for getting your HOA to approve your home improvement project.

Start by digging out the copy of the CC&R's (covenants, conditions and restrictions). You were mostly likely given these at the time you closed on your home. Don’t worry you don’t need to read all of the Rules and Regulations just the ones referring to areas of property restrictions. This should give you an idea of what is acceptable and what isn’t in your community.

Don’t stop there, however, because some things may have changed. Even if you have kept your binder up-to-date with revisions you’ll want to check with your neighborhoods property management company about the current protocol for getting your project approved.

Call or stop by their office and ask them to explain the entire process and how long it will take to get an approval. Find out what forms need to be filled out and where to find them.

Also ask if there are pre-approved colors that must be used or if you are free to make your own selection. Also ask them if there is any guidance they can give you on color selection based on their experience. Their answer may just give you more insight on how to have your plans accepted than any written guidelines. It is well worth you time to ask.

You may think that if you have pre-approved colors that all you have to do is pick one and done. Not so fast. Even if the color is pre-approved it might not be approved for your home if it is identical to your neighbors. Look around and make sure your colors don’t mirror another home close by.

If you are on your own for choosing colors, look for colors that will express your personality or give your home a unique look but don’t deviate too far from what is the norm for your neighborhood. The ideal color scheme stands out while still fitting in. If you keep that idea in mind as you select your color scheme you’ll be well on your way to getting an HOA approval for your plans.

In my experience, it takes anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months to get an approval for your colors and design. Don’t expect to decide to paint one day and be doing it the next when you’re in an HOA. You must allow for the time it takes to get approval.

As I alluded to earlier, asking for approval on a project after you’ve already completed it is often times a headache. On several occasions I have been hired to give my professional opinion to resolve a color dispute. From these experiences I can tell you that it is much easier to gain approval prior to beginning your project.

Keep in mind that the main goal of a HOA is to protect the property values of individual homeowners. By enforcing the rules, the HOA helps maintain the aesthetics of the neighborhood and property values of all the homes in the community.

In a perfect world this is a good thing for everyone. In the real world you may find that your HOA’s architectural review board has little knowledge of design and is only comfortable approving something that is very much like what is there now. If that is the case and you have your heart set on stepping beyond their color comfort zone you are will have to build a convincing case.

Often showing the committee rather than telling them is the best way to go about convincing them that your plan is a good fit for both your home and the neighborhood. Photos, samples, drawings or anything that can help them visualize the end result can be much more convincing than anything you can say.

Here are some related stories that may give you idea for putting together your presentation to the committee:

Getting your colors approved in most cases isn’t difficult. If you just take the time to understand the process and follow the steps, your request will be back to you in no time marked APPROVED!

From the Architect's Corner - AIA 2013

I really enjoyed working at the AIA Expo at the national convention this year. We had some great discussions with architects from all over the country (26 states recorded for literature/sample requests), and overall the show had a good vibe and our polymer slate and shake roof tiles received a warm reception. In case you didn't make it into the expo, I kept tabs of the top 5 frequently asked questions so that I could come back here and share them with you.

  1. What is the product made of? The products are made of 100% virgin polymers, UV stabilizers and thermal stabilizers using the most advanced technology.

  2. What is the fire rating? (if you have spent any time in Colorado recently, sadly this is something everybody is talking about) It is a Class A Fire Rated material. This means that all of the products have passed ASTM E 108. Click here to learn what that means and watch a video of a fire test.

  3. What colors does it come in? We make 49 standard colors that we mix into our different color blends for slate and shake. You can choose either a standard blend, for example, Brownstone in DaVinci Slate, or you can use our colors to customize your own blend. Click here to access our color tool and find the color blend that works for you.

  4. Is it recyclable? YES! We will take back jobsite waste and repurpose it into our starter tiles. Click here to read more!

  5. Can I see installations in my area? Sure! Click here to email me and request an installation list for your city.

Below you will see the famous Big Blue Bear statue that looks into the Colorado Convention Center.

What Color Roof Would Look Best with Our Siding?

0
0

We have a taupe colored cement board siding and white trim. What color roof would look best. We are also adding a 2 car unattached garage next to the house and have a shed also to roof same cement board. It is called timber bark. It looks more gray outside and greener inside. Thanks for your help

Diane Hampton
Waukesha, WI
Product: DaVinci Slate

****************************************************************************************************************************************

Hello Ms. Hampton,

I believe you are referring to a James Hardy color called Timber Bark. This color is a deep rich color so for your roof you can go with something similar or something lighter. It really depends on the style of your home and how much the trim lightens up the overall look.

If you want to go with Slate, I think both Multi-Width Aberdeen and Bellaforté Cambridge would be good choices. The Aberdeen would give you more color variation but you will have to decide what look will work best on your home.

Shake could also work. Verona is color blend that is lighter and I think will blend with the Timber Bark, Tahoe is in the darker range. What you want to look for is a color with the same basic tone as your main color. Going light or dark is really a matter of taste. Either will work.

Whether slate or shake, the colors don't need to match the Timber Bark exactly but the main color and roof color should look pleasing side by side. Let your eye tell you which way to go.

Having the same color roof on all three building will help give the property a cohesive look and tie the buildings together in style.

I hope that helps.

Sincerely,

Kate Smith
