Slate roof tiles have long been favored by church designers, for two reason - their longevity and their traditional appearance. Steep structures, like steeples, can be difficult to shingle with natural slates as they are heavy and break easily. Manufactured slate tiles, like Bellaforté Slate, are lighter and easier to install, saving the church money on overall installed cost for its new roof.

Bellaforté Slate in the Smokey Gray blend was chosen for St. Teresa's new roof located in Sleepy Hollow, New Jersey. It was installed by CRO International out of North Brunswick, NJ. Thank you for sharing this project with us CRO International

Hurricane Season Meets Its Match - Impact-Resistant Roofs

Synthetic shakeEvery June is the same: people think about graduation ceremonies, barbecues and summer vacation plans. Yet, as the weather turns warmer, it's also the month to think about preparing your home and family for potential problems.

Disaster Preparedness Month in June coincides with the start of hurricane season each year --- and for good reason. Hurricanes can impact millions of people living both on the coast and far, far inland. Flooding, extensive rain and very high winds are major concerns related to hurricanes. The National Hurricane Center encourages everyone to "Be Ready" and offers a checklist of information for your home and business.

Here's our question to you: Is your roof ready to handle potential severe weather?

Many roofing products simply don't hold up to severe winds and strong rain. But, products by DaVinci Roofscapes do. Our synthetic slate and composite shake roofing materials are built to weather the storm. They've even passed the strictest industry standards to earn a Class 4 impact rating. (See Polymer Roofing Welcomes Hurricane-Force Winds)

DaVinci shake roofing and slate roofing materials have a Class 4 impact rating which shows they are designed to resist damage from flying debris and hail. Check out this quick videoto see how DaVinci products compare to other roofing materials ... and how they can help prepare your home against potential disasters!

synthetic shakeSince 2000, CMR Construction & Roofing has built a standing for exceptional work and customer satisfaction. A national company licensed in 20 states, CMR professionals are known for their dedication to excellence and working with top-quality products.

For more than a dozen of their years in business, CMR has relied on synthetic slate and shake roofing tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes to help advance its company reputation. Based in Dallas, Texas, CMR installs between 10 and 30 DaVinci roofs a year, with many customers preferring Bellaforté Shake products.

"Homeowners gravitate to the aesthetics of DaVinci products and we've been exceptionally pleased with their performance year-after-year," says Steven M. Soule, CEO of CMR Construction & Roofing. "We specialize in high-end roofing and the quality, pricing and aesthetics of DaVinci polymer roofing certainly matches up with our company standards."

From churches to residential projects, CMR has relied on DaVinci designer roofs for many of their popular projects in the past. The wide selection of colors available from DaVinci, plus the company's ability to create custom colors has closed many sales for CMR.

"One of the largest re-roofing projects our company did with DaVinci roofing relied on the creation of custom colors to replicate the color of a pre-existing roof," says Soule. "The McFarlin Memorial Methodist Church in Norman, Oklahoma had a specific green color and we were able to have DaVinci create that color, making our customer extremely happy."

Over the years we've shared dozens of stories on this blog site related to how DaVinci composite roofing has been used to top off historic structures. National Preservation Month in June is the ideal time to shine a spotlight on some of our favorite historic projects that have been re-roofed with our synthetic slate and composite shake roofing materials.

Salmon River Lighthouse

Selected for its durability against strong winds and severe weather, a DaVinci Multi-Width Slate roofing now tops off the Salmon River Lighthouse in Pulaski, N.Y. Built in 1838, the stone structure is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. (See Historic Lighthouse Gets Durable New DaVinci Roof)

Chapel at Dayton Veterans' Administration Medical Center

Built more than 145 years ago, the chapel at Dayton Veteran's Administration Medical Center now has a DaVinci slate roof overhead in a unique design pattern to replicate its original slate roof. The Ohio chapel used both tan and black tiles to re-create a large cross design with a star-studded border on the roof. (See Dayton Veterans Administration Medical Center Gets a New Roof!)

Douglas House

In 1853 the Douglas House in Waukegan, Illinois was constructed to replicate a style the homeowner, Robert Douglas, was fond of from his birthplace in England. After cedar roofing failed, the city invested in a DaVinci composite shake roof to give renewed life to the structure. (See Composite Shakes Replace Real Cedar on Historic Home)

Jean Bonnet Tavern

Located in Bedford, Pennsylvania, the Jean Bonnet Tavern was constructed in the 1760s and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Roundhouse at DuSable Museum

Following a unique history that includes serving as a horse stable during the 1893 World's Fair, the Roundhouse at DuSable Museum in Chicago now boasts a DaVinci Multi-Width Slate roof. The new roof replicates the original slate roof. Part of the first African American museum campus in the United States, the Roundhouse will soon be home to a library, galleries, technology and language lab and educational spaces. (See A Day ... When the wind blows hard, you want a contractor you can depend on. In the Denver marketplace, that contractor is Advanced Exteriors.

"We specialize in full-service storm damage restoration, which includes re-roofing and insurance claim settlements," says Ty Correy, president of Advanced Exteriors. "Since 2009, we've worked with homeowners affected by storms who need replacement roofs. One of our top recommendations is DaVinci Roofscapes."

For the past several years, Correy and his team have installed upwards of 30 DaVinci roofs each year. What makes DaVinci a good option?

Slate Roof Slate Synthetic Rood

"Once impacted by severe weather, many homeowners make the decision to invest in a premium roofing system," says Correy. "DaVinci offers synthetic roofing products that have an authentic look, lifetime limited warranty, resist hail and high winds. These reliable roofs --- especially the Bellaforté products --- are available as an economical roof replacement (especially when an insurance claim is involved) and they can help differentiate a home in a neighborhood.

"Our company has a great reputation. One aspect of creating that reputation is that we rely on companies like DaVinci that have a longstanding track record of product performance. Our customers depend on us ... and we depend on DaVinci."

Synthetic Shake

Cedar shakes are a traditional look in the west, for both roofing and siding. In recent years, the use of natural cedar shakes has gone down due to availability and performance issues. In neighborhoods with a lot of trees, the shift towards a polymer cedar shake roof makes sense given the surroundings. Polymer shake roofs, like Bellaforté Shake featured here, are fire and impact resistant, harmonize with the natural surroundings, and won't grow mold or algae.

This project was shared to us by Granite Roofing in Radthdrum, ID. I like these photos because they show the Bellaforté Shake used as both the roofing material as well as the siding on the dormers. These homeowners will appreciate many years of maintenance free shakes. Thank you for sharing this project with us Granite Roofing!

Before and after photos are amazing to receive because they really help tell a story that I think we can all relate to. You have an old, possibly leaking, roof that needs to be replaced. There are tons of options on the market, from regular asphalt all the way up to expensive tile. You want to choose something that is durable, but also fits the look you need to maintain the standards of the neighborhood. On top of that, you have to find a reputable, local roofing company to install it.

This project, installed by Naperville Exterior out of Naperville, IL, shows the before and after of a natural cedar shake roof being replaced with a lifetime roof by DaVinci Roofscapes. Bellaforté Shake, in the Tahoe Blend, is long lasting, durable, and will retain is texture and color (unlike natural cedar shake!) so the likelihood of this homeowner ever needing a new roof again is pretty low. National Safety Month Jobsite Tips

$
0

June is National Safety Month ... an excellent time for a refresher course on jobsite safety when installing a DaVinci synthetic slate or composite shake roof.

Here are some tips for roofers to follow when installing our roofs:

Synthetic RoofTip #1 - Start by wearing clothes and shoes that are comfortable, yet sensible for the jobsite. This includes closed-toe shoes or work boots that can give you traction on the roof.

Tip #2 - Always stay harnessed or tethered in when working on roofs. Click HERE for tips from Family Handyman magazine on how to properly use a roof safety harness.

Tip #3 - When nailing or screwing on roofing tiles, always wear safety glasses. Make sure your nail gun is properly cleaned and well-lubricated before each use. And, never rest the nail gun against your body to stop the potential of misfires.

Tip #4 - Don't over-exert yourself. Position materials close to the roof and ladder area to save time and energy. If you're carrying bundles up the ladder to the roof, make your legs do the work, not your back.

Tip #5 - Take time to secure your ladder on a solid, level surface. For the safest angle, place the base of the ladder a quarter of the working length of the ladder away from the wall or other vertical surface Make sure you don’t have to stretch or reach more than your arm’s length while standing on the ladder.

These are only some of the key tips for roofers. For additional roofer safety tips, see 10 Safety Tips for Roofers.

Making the time at each and every jobsite to assure that you and your co-workers are practicing safety measures can have a big impact on your long-term viability as a roofer. Thinking "safety first" can eliminate dangerous situations on the jobsite.

1.2 Million Pounds and Counting

At DaVinci Roofscapes, we offer 49 different colors of synthetic slate and composite shake roofing tiles. This gives you an abundance of options to get the exact color --- or blend of colors --- you want on your designer roof.

Each time our manufacturing operation changes a color run of polymer tiles, there is a transition between colors. If you remember playing with Play-Doh as a child, it's the same thing. When you're finished with the red and start to put blue through your toy, there's inevitably an overlap ... maybe even creating a streak of color or a purple mixture. That's what happens when we make color run changes.

Polymer roofingThose transition tiles are "off spec" and immediately recycled at our facility in Kansas. They're ground up and moulded into starter shingles, which are generally not visible on a roof.

Why are we sharing this with you? Because June is National Recycling Month. And we believe it's important for you to know that every polymer tile we create is 100 percent recyclable. Because of our efforts, we keep about 1.2 million pounds of polymer scrap out of landfills each year.

Our record-setting recycling efforts include the remolding of more than 696,000 pounds of grinded scrap into starter tiles, and the transfer of 567,000 pounds of scrap to an end-user who makes pallets, crates and totes.

At DaVinci Roofscapes, we look for ways to recycle and reuse every single piece of composite roofing waste in our plant ... and, even on the jobsite. We encourage our roofing customers to return any DaVinci unused imitation slate or fake cedar shake roofing to us after they complete a project. We're happy to recycle and reuse those pieces to help assure that our full cycle of operations is as environmentally friendly as possible. (See Return Those DaVinci Scraps!)

By Kelly Porter, Houzz

I have a confession to make. I often spend so much time and energy making sure the inside of my home is colorful and stylish that I end up neglecting the exterior. As often as I help clients with their exterior color selections, I should know better. A home's exterior provides that first impression, which shouldn't include sun-faded shutters. So this year I'm giving my home a fresh paint job, and I've collected colorful ideas that I'd like to share with you, just in case the outside of your home could use some TLC, too.

Easy-Care Home Improvements for Aging Baby Boomers

Are YOU a Baby Boomer?

Independent and plentiful in numbers, Baby Boomers are a major part of America's housing outlook. With more than 76 million people born between 1946 and 1964, Baby Boomers are either currently in retirement or planning for retirement --- and their living arrangements are a primary consideration.

Synthetic Shake

According to a survey conducted by Demand Institute of more than 4,000 Baby Boomer households, 63 percent of those surveyed do not plan to move, preferring instead to "age in place." Of those respondents, "low maintenance/upkeep" is rated as the third highest concern for Boomers staying in their current homes.

On the exterior of the house, switching to manmade products requiring little or no upkeep can be exceptionally beneficial for Baby Boomers. From the roof down to the porch, replacement products can be added to homes to make long-term living less stressful in an existing home.

Start with the roof. Synthetic slate and shake roofing tiles have the look of real slate or shake, but with none of the worries. Manufactured to provide years of beauty with no maintenance hassles, composite roofing tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes are impact-, fire-, high wind- and insect-resistant. The polymer roofing materials come in dozens of colors and color blends to complement any home exterior and feature a lifetime limited warranty. (See Slate or Shake --- Which DaVinci Roofscapes Product is for Me?)

Aging homeowners ready to say farewell to the splitting, cupping and cracking problems of real slate or cedar are embracing synthetic roofing products. As a bonus, these synthetic roofing products are so durable that many insurance companies offer discounts on homeowner insurance policies to people investing in synthetic roofing!

13 years. That's how long Douglas Fry Roofing, Inc. has been installing synthetic slate and shake roofing from DaVinci Roofscapes.

"We installed the first or second DaVinci roof ever sold in Wichita, Kansas, so we've been a DaVinci fan right from the start," says James Douglas Fry, president of Douglas Fry Roofing. "The quality of the DaVinci products keeps bringing us back. We appreciate the lightweight nature of the tiles for installation, but also their durability and longevity. For our area, you just can't beat the Class 4 impact rating on the DaVinci tiles."

You also can't beat the skill and dedication exhibited by the team at Douglas Fry Roofing. The company is known for its quality workmanship and the fact that they only use fully-trained employees to install their roofs. Plus, when installing DaVinci synthetic shake or composite slate products, they use products designed to last as long as the DaVinci roofing materials --- like stainless steel nails, high-grade underlayments and copper accents.

"Getting a new roof can be intimidating for a homeowner," says Fry. "A roof isn't something you purchase every few years. So, we work with them on their roofing options and educate people on the type of roofing materials that will stand up to the severe weather that Mother Nature throws our way in Kansas.

"When homeowners are looking for a dependable composite roofing product at a reasonable price, we point them toward Bellaforté. We've found this durable roof has strong longevity, plus it resists fire, impact, moisture and insects. DaVinci products will work hard for a homeowner. With their lifetime limited warranty, it's most likely the last roof a homeowner will ever purchase."

"We save about $2,000 a year on our homeowners insurance premiums with AAA since having our DaVinci roof installed. We were in the market for a new roof after a hail storm. Being in Oklahoma I wanted to put something on our roof that would stand up to future storms. The DaVinci roofing product has provided us with the durability to handle our unpredictable weather plus enhanced the architectural look of our home." - Kevin Riley

“After my roof had hail damage, my independent adjuster told me we’d save 25 to 30 percent on our annual homeowner’s insurance because the DaVinci Roofscapes polymer roof we purchased resists severe weather, hail and fire." - Andrew Marenin

Slate Roofing MaterialsSince 1993, Eaton Roofing and Exteriors has helped Kansas homeowners get new roofs over their heads. The company prides itself on offering a full range of residential roofing services including new roof installation, maintenance and repair.

For the past dozen years, the team at Eaton Roofing has installed composite roofing from DaVinci Roofscapes. During that time they've put up more than 150 synthetic shake and composite slate roofs. With so much experience on their side, we asked Mark Eaton, president of the company, to share his insights on what a typical homeowner should know about roofing.

"We understand that purchasing a new roof can be a confusing process," says Eaton. "A good roofing company should help you simplify the process as much as possible by helping you select exactly the right materials for your specific roofing needs.

"Once the selections are made, a quality roofer should be efficient, safe and neat on the job site. At our company we tidy up at the end of each day and thoroughly clean a job site at the completion of the re-roofing process. Actually, we strive to leave each roofing job site looking better than it was beforehand!"

At Eaton Roofing, the team deals with many storm-related damaged roofs. According to Eaton, hail-resistance, quality and appearance are the key selling aspects of DaVinci impact-resistant roofs for people in his area.

Here are some other tips offered by Eaton to consider when re-roofing your home:

  • Tip #1 - Get a roofer to thoroughly examine your existing roof and point out specifically where there's damage. If there's hail or other damage to the roof, make sure to have your insurance company come out to evaluate the roof.
  • Tip #2 - Compare the roofer's inspection of damages to the insurance inspection documents to ensure that all damages are recognized and accounted for. If needed, have your roofer meet the insurance adjuster to go over any damages that are found on the roof. Everyone should be on the same page before re-roofing work starts.
  • Tip #3 - Work with your roofers to set up a "safety perimeter zone" around your house so you'll know exactly where they're working and so that you can identify shrubbery or other areas that need extra securing.
  • Tip #4 - During the day(s) of re-roofing, make certain that children and pets are secured. Practice "safety first" for your own family during this process.
  • Tip #5 - Make sure to get the workmanship/manufacturer warranty along with the invoice from your roofer. And, assure that the same invoice is sent to your insurance provider so they know the repairs have been completed.

custom slate roofThe residents at Meadowbrook Manor in Bolingbrook, IL are now enjoying a new polymer slate roof on top of their residence. Bellaforté Slate, in a custom color, was installed last year adding an upscale aesthetic quality to the neighborhood and improving the overall performance of the building. The roofing contractor, Apex Exteriors, is a polymer roofing expert out of the Chicago area and is familiar with the DaVinci Roofscapes product lines and how to install the Bellaforté profile. They installed the custom color we named Weathered Brick on this senior living facility. The blend, which is not a part of our standard color palette, was designed by our in house color experts to give the look of a weathered red brick color. The profile was Bellaforté Slate, which self-aligns and interlocks, for a faster less cumbersome install.

Fireworks and Rooftops

class a fire ratingSparklers. Bottle rockets. Roman candles. It seems like fireworks have always been a key part of July 4th celebrations.

While colorful and exciting, fireworks can also cause severe problems when ignited near dry grass and trees. And, a big concern for those soaring sky-high fireworks is where they'll land.

With drought conditions prevalent in many areas across the country, a single spark from a firecracker landing on a real cedar roof can cause problems. Just as when sparks fly from wildfires and fall on roofs up to a mile away, firework sparks can have potentially deadly results.

For peace-of-mind now and in the future, consider the type of roofing on your house. Synthetic shake and slate tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes are fire-resistant. Even if you take a blow torch to our composite roofing tiles, you won't see the spread of flames (see a flame test video pitting real shake versus synthetic shake HERE).

That resistance to fire (along with impact, high winds, insects and algae growth) is a chief reason why many people invest in a DaVinci roof. Backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty, our Class A Fire Rated roofing materials are made to last ... and to withstand the sparks flying from both wildfires and July 4th celebrations.
