Benefits of a DaVinci Polymer Roof

$

0

DaVinci Roofscapes makes both simulated shake shingles and synthetic slate roof shingles. Our shake and slate products are made from 100% virgin resin, so they are a man-made product that looks like their natural counterpart, but has superior performance.

DaVinci SlateHere is a run down of the benefits of our polymer roof systems:

  • Looks: Our products have the aesthetic appeal of the natural product, but without the performance issues.

  • Thickness: Since our product is man-made, we are able to achieve a thickness that matches that of a premium shake or a premium slate shingle, without the extra cost.

  • Widths: You have the ability to select either a single-width or multi-width product - whichever suits your tastes.

  • Color Blends: We have standard color blends that appeal to the colors you'd find in a natural slate or shake roof. And we can also create custom blends and custom colors.

  • Lightweight: Our tiles are designed to be lightweight - about the same weight as an asphalt shingle roof.

  • Waste: During the installation process, our shingles can be installed in a way that makes for very little waste.

  • Fire Retardance: Our products have achieved a Class A fire rating (with appropriate underlayments).

  • Wind Resistance: Our products have a straight line wind resistance rating up to 110 mph.

  • Impact Resistance: Out products have an impact resistance of Class 4.

  • Freeze/Thaw Resistance: Since they are man made, our polymer roof tiles do not have the expansion and contraction issues that a natural product would.

Do you have a DaVinci roof? What added features and benefits have you found from having one of our polymer roofs?  We want to hear your roof story.

Freeze/Thaw Not an Issue with a DaVinci Roof

DaVinci Roofscapes' Cedar Shake AlternativeIf you live in an area where temperature changes cause a lot of freeze and thaw, then your roof probably experiences it too.

In fact, freeze/thaw issues can be detrimental to all roof products, including natural slate and shake. A wood shake roof, especially, will experience freeze/thaw cycles. And when a natural wood roof goes through those cycles, it can split, crack, curl and even develop holes in the shakes - that then allows for pests and water to get through the shingles. This ultimately breaks down the overall roof and is the reason that wood shake roofs don't last as long in areas that experience broad temperature swings from day to night.

DaVinci's imitation slate shingles and our cedar shake alternative shingles are made of 100% virgin polymer resin, which is impervious to freeze-thaw cycles. Since our tiles do not absorb water, the issues that come with freezing aren't a problem with our manmade product. Likewise, our tiles are thermally stable - the coefficient of thermal expansion is 10-3in/in °F.  HUH?!  In other words, a DaVinci 12” slate tile expands 1/12” with a 100 degree temperature swing.

DaVinci 12” slate tiles expands 1/12” with a 100 degree temperature swing - See more at: http://blog.davinciroofscapes.com/blog/up-on-the-roof/do-extreme-freeze-thaw-cycles-affect-davinci-tiles#sthash.JXgpBXjx.dpuf

The fact that our tiles have such little movement during freeze/thaw cycles is another great benefit of going with a synthetic polymer roof tile.

Alabama Roofs Ruined by Hail

Side-by-side family homes in Jasper, Alabama recently received similar severe hail storm damage. Roofs on both homes --- one of natural slate and the other an asphalt shingle --- were deemed a "total loss" by the insurance companies.

When it came time to replace the roofs, owner Bobby Bull of Bull Building Supply, leaned on his industry expertise and selected DaVinci Roofscapes polymer roofing tiles. For his multi-story home the selection was DaVinci Multi-Width Slate in an Aberdeen color blend of dark gray, light brown, dark purple, green stone and dark stone.

For his son's ranch-style home next door, the choice was DaVinci Multi-Width Shake in the Tahoe color blend featuring five shades of brown Tahoe. Both roofs are fire- and impact-resistant with 50-year limited warranties, so hail storms won't be a problem in the future.

"We installed the roofs on both homes and they look tremendous," says Steve Miller, president of Miller Roofing, Inc. "Bobby sells several roofing products, including DaVinci. He absolutely knew that this would be the best roof for his own home. I've been installing roofs for 45 years and the DaVinci product is one of the most impressive roofing products I've ever seen.

"When you think that natural slate was so damaged by the hail that it was a total loss, you have to wonder why more people don't use alternative roofing materials like those from DaVinci. These slate and shake synthetic products have such a realistic look you simply can't tell it's not the real thing."

"Fighting Irish" Fan of DaVinci Polymer Slate Roof

Located near the famous University of Notre Dame Main Building sits the Sara Bea Learning Center for Students with Disabilities. The large structure provides accommodations for students with disabilities attending the university, houses the campus mail distribution center and is home to a back-up generator system.

Failing asphalt shingles and venting problems on the roof required the university to find a long-term solution for the structure's roof in 2013. While some people desired a natural slate roof on the building, Senior Project Manager for Facilities Design & Operations at the university, Tony Polotto, had other ideas.

"This residential style building couldn't support the weight of traditional slate tiles so I looked into polymer slates," says Polotto, LEED AP BD&C, RRC, RRO. "I reviewed many tile options but was most excited about the DaVinci Roofscapes Multi-Width Slate tiles. The appearance, features and benefits of the polymer slate was commendable. After the Learning Center roof was completed, I found myself so impressed with the product that I installed it on my own home."

Learning About Polymer Roofs

"This is the first time we installed a slate alternative on campus, but you can't tell any difference from the natural slate," says Polotto. "The roof blends in perfectly with the surrounding buildings that feature real slate."

Nearly 10,000 square feet of roof  on the university's Learning Center was covered with synthetic slate roof tiles from DaVinci in the European blend of light, medium and dark gray along with light and dark purple. The structure features copper valleys, snow guards, gutters and downspouts.

"Sustainability is a large part of how we construct buildings on our campus," says Polotto, who oversees the entire University Roofing program at Notre Dame. "The 50-year limited warranty provided by DaVinci aligns with our goal of using long-term, environmentally-friendly products."

On the Homefront

After supervising the successful roofing project on campus, Polotto decided to reroof his home. "My house is just nine years old, but the architectural shingles were already showing signs of bacterial growth and weakness from hail damage," says Polotto.

The 12/12 roof pitch on the home made replacement a challenge --- especially since Polotto decided to re-roof the house himself.

"Every night and on weekends during the entire summer I went up and did the installation," says Polotto. "I started with Grace Ice and Water Shield under the roof and also used 30 pound felt to achieve a Class A fire rating. I read all the DaVinci instructions and watched every installation video I could find to ensure I performed the installation correctly. It was a great experience and I'm proud of the finished project."

Because the look of the DaVinci roof on the Sara Bea Learning Center so impressed him, Polotto used Valoré Slate alternative tiles on his home. He staggered the 12-inch tiles in Dark Gray to give the roof an authentic, natural slate look.

"In my experience I've found that most homeowners are not educated on roofing options," says Polotto. "Too often they stick with asphalt shingles because they don't know about any other product. That's a shame, because those shingles need to be replaced in about 20 years or less ... and the DaVinci tiles will be on my roof for at least 50 years.

"During my home's roof replacements, dozens of people stopped to ask me what type of roof I was installing. They thought it looked incredible. Now I'm helping educate people at the University of Notre Dame and in my neighborhood about all the attributes of the DaVinci polymer slate tiles!"

Traditional Regional Roof Colors: Northeast

It's probably safe to say that the Northeast has some of the most traditional roof colors in our country.

Synthetic Slate RoofTraditional roof colors in any area usually have something to do with the natural occurring products that are available in an area - such as slate tiles or wood shake shingles from trees.

According to our color expert, Kate Smith, "Homes in the Northeast tend to be clad in traditional colors with deeper or brighter accents. White with black shutters, gray with a red front door, or natural stain with green trim" are the tradition.

If you are looking to match your roofing material and the color of your roof with the architecture of your home, then you will enjoy this simple guide to matching your roofing to the style of your home. Our cedar shake alternative and our synthetic slate roof shingles come in a virtually limitless colors and blends. So whatever color you're trying to match, we can match it for you with one of our 49 standard colors or create a custom color just for you.

With before and after photos there isn't really much for me to say in a blog other than "check these out!". This building, located in Weehawkin, New Jersey (Featured Project to come!), got a makeover with a new Valoré Slate roof earlier this fall. Valoré Slate is a single-width polymer slate tile system, and in Slate Black is perfect for the traditional look of the Northeast.

Color Expert, Kate Smith, shared her thoughts on going with a Slate Black roof in a previous blog by saying, “Black roofs provide an anchor for tall homes by helping visually lower the roof and make the home look wider in contrast to the siding color and trim. Use a black plastic slate or shake roof with homes painted in gray, blue, green or white ... or a brick home.”

Happy Friday, Architects!

Why Choose Polymer Instead of Asphalt or Natural Slate or Shake?

$

If you are in the process of deciding what roofing material to go with - then perhaps you are interested in knowing why one might choose synthetic slate roof tiles or cedar shake alternative tiles over asphalt, natural slate or a natural wood shake roof.

DaVinci Cedar Shake Alternative Here are some reasons to go with a DaVinci polymer tile over the other choices:

  • Environment - At DaVinci we are environmentally conscious. Our tiles are manufactured start to finish in our Kansas City plant to save on transportation and energy costs - then we use the energy we do use to help heat the plant in the cooler months. As well our tiles are offered in Cool Roof colors that are ENERGY STAR® qualified, help cut down on the heat island effect and also contribute to the LEED certification process. Not to mention our tiles are 100% recyclable!

  • Testing Certifications/Performance - DaVinci shingle systems have attained a Class 4 impact rating, a Class A fire rating and also have superior wind resistance.

  • Installation - DaVinci shingles come pre-sorted according to their color and width. In other words, they are job site ready. Natural slate tiles require sorting on the job site, which is more labor cost for you. Wood shake usually just comes in one variety, as does Asphalt.

  • Color - With DaVinci, you get the color you want with superior fade resistance. Wood shake, however, does tend to fade and change color with age. Check out the virtually limitless color options on our color studio!

  • Aesthetics - DaVinci shingles look just like their natural slate and shake counterparts. Asphalt can look good, but it doesn't come close to the killer curb appeal DaVinci delivers.

Did you decide on DaVinci over asphalt? How about natural slate? Or natural shake? What were your reasons?

Dressing Up Our Summer Ocean Home - What Color Shake Should We Use?

Hi. We recently bought a summer/ocean house in Rumson, NJ. it will under go extensive interior renovation and some exterior but we want to maintain the weathered grey, shake exterior look with white trim windows with a more casual summer house feel. there will be a porch and turret with a tin roof color not determined yet. We want to use your product for the roof and like some of the three color combos mixing and matching the greys, blue/light purple and lighter green colors but could use some help!

We didn't see any picture examples of a house like that so am reaching out for some thoughts.

Thank you,

Noushin and Greg Framke

****************************************************************************************************************************************

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Framke,

I think you have a great idea for topping off your seaside home that will give it a casual yet distinctive look.

It is difficult for me to see the color of your siding in the image so I am giving two examples of blends that might work and how you can think about your exact color selections.

The first blend is Green Stone, Light Purple and Dark Purple. The Green Stone is a muted green that could blend with your siding rather than match. The two purples are also muted yet colorful enough to give the look you are after. By using two tones of the same color mixed with the Green Stone. It keeps the look interesting without getting too busy.

The second blend is a slightly different variation on this idea. Light Green and Medium Gray although different colors visually blend together and are punctuated by the Dark Purple. You have both variation on value (lightness/darkness) as well as color. Again you are keeping the colors a bit muted as to work well with the shakes on your siding.

You can play with the Color Designer online but to get you started but play with the color samples as well to see how the colors work together. I would begin by choosing one of the colors in about the same value as your siding that matches or blend with the color. Then chose two or more other colors that you like with this color. Check your scheme by looking at the small chips together. You can then work with Katie Wheeler, the DaVinci Roofscapes Project Specialist for your area, to get larger samples of the colors so you can confirm you choice.

I hope that helps get you started in personalizing your roof. I think your home is going to look great with this look.

Sincerely,

Kate Smith

Roofing Tips: Ice Dam? What's That?

$
0
0

If you live in an area of the country that gets a lot of snow, then you may already know about ice damming. Or perhaps you live an area that gets a lot of snow, but you are not familiar with the term.

Ice DamAs you can see in the photo an ice dam looks quite menacing, and actually can be. Ice damming is caused when the heat from the home or building is lost through the attic and melts the snow on the roof  which drains down to the eaves where there is no heat loss (no attic) causing it to pond and then refreeze. As more snow melts, more water drains and refreezes on top of the already frozen melt off and forms am ice dam.

So, how do you help prevent ice dams from happening on your roof? The best solution is to make sure you have proper insulation in your attic and adequate ventilation on your roof. In theory, this will keep the roof temperature as close to the outside temperature as possible allowing the snow to melt and drain off more evenly.

Read more about this topic here on our blog:

Smashing Pumpkins Won't Impact DaVinci Roof

What would Thanksgiving be without pumpkin pie?

If the start-from-scratch recipe in your household begins with smashing pumpkins, rest easy. Even if your teenage nephew decides it's a good idea to help out by smashing open pumpkins on your DaVinci roof, you're okay.

"Creativity, teenagers and a vast supply of pumpkins are a unique combination that could spell trouble for some homeowners," says Mark Hansen, vice president of sales for DaVinci Roofscapes. “Fortunately for people with our polymer slate and shake roofing tiles overhead, even smashing pumpkins won't damage their roofs.

“These roofing tiles are impact- and fire-resistant. They stand up to hail and severe weather conditions, so while the roof may look like a pumpkin pie explosion, if a few pumpkins get targeted at a home at least there won't be any lasting damage."

If you're frantically searching for the perfect pumpkin for your Thanksgiving pie, head to the town of Morton, Illinois --- or anywhere within a 90-mile radius of Peoria, Illinois! According to the University of Illinois, 90 percent of pumpkins grown in the United States are raised within 90 miles of Peoria. And, Morton is the self-proclaimed "Pumpkin Capital of the World" so pumpkins are readily available for last-minute pumpkin pies!

Happy Thanksgiving!

These homeowners have gone maintenance free after removing their old cedar shakes and replacing them with a Bellaforté Shake roof in Espresso, which is a warm brown color blend from our shake line.

Mike Brennan, with Brennan Exteriors located in Mukwonago, WI told me the installation went smoothly, much more so than natural cedar shakes. Bellaforté Shake is a self-aligning system that, other than the first course, requires no chalk lines to be snapped as the pieces fit together as they are being installed. Once a roofer gets the hang of it, this can mean a faster installation, which can save everybody time and money.

A Cedar Shake Roofing Alternative = Polymer Shake

Perhaps you live in an area that is prone to salt air and lots and lots of sunshine. Or maybe you live in an area that can't have a natural shake roof because of the fire dangers.

Cedar Shake Roofing AlternativeHowever, you like the look of shake and your home or building demands that sort of roof to look right.

So, what options do you have?

Because of the fire dangers of natural wood shake as well as the potential maintenance issues, there are now cedar shake alternative roofing products, such as our synthetic shake shingles.

Here are 5 reasons to pick our simulated shake roofing over a wood shake roof:

  • Class A Fire Rating - That's right our shingles have a Class A fire rating when installed with proper underlayments.

  • Class 4 Impact Rating - Our shingles have achieved UL - 2218 Class 4 Impact Rating, whereas natural shake shingles can dry out and therefore become brittle over time, eliminating their ability to withstand heavy hail storms.

  • Freeze/Thaw Resistant - Because our shingles are made of engineered polymer, they are impervious to freeze/thaw cycles, whereas natural shake naturally expands and contracts, opening it up to all sorts of issues freeze/thaw issues.

  • Maintenance Free - Our shingles are known to be vitually maintenance free as they resist cracking, curling, spliting, etc., however with natural shake there is usually the need to replace individual shingles throughout the life of the roof.

  • Color Fade Resistant - With natural shake it starts out, usually a bright orange and then fades rapidly within a year to a gray color (depends on the wood and where it is sourced from as to what hue of gray). With our tiles, you have the choice of what color you want and that's the color your roof will have for years to come!

Open Valley or Closed Valley?

$

When installing a new roof, one of the decisions you have to make as a home or building owner is whether or not you want to have open or closed valleys. You are probably wondering what the heck that means. To make it easier on you, we have included some photos of open and closed valleys in this post, so that you can see the difference.

The first two photos are examples of open valleys. You can see the copper metal in the valley is exposed. Of course, as the copper is exposed to oxygen, it will develop a greenish tone called patina- but these photos were taken recently after the roofs were installed, so they are perfect for showing what an open valley is. You can tell that with an open valley there is a visible strip of metal that is exposed.

A closed valley is where the field tile shingles butt up to one another, so that strip of metal is not exposed. While there are some roof coverings that don't require metal flashing for closed valleys, our lightweight roofing materials require a self adhered membrane as underlayment, and copper, aluminum, or painted metal for open or closed valleys.

Shake Closed Valley

No matter which valley you decide to go with you can always refer to our installation guides on our website for directions.

Do you have a DaVinci luxury roof? Did you go with open or closed valleys?  Please consider submitting your house or building to appear on our blog!

Let It Snow… And Keep The Snow On Your Roof

If you live in an area that gets a lot of snow, then you’re probably already aware of the importance of snow guards on the roof. Or perhaps you have just moved into a cold region and aren’t familiar with snowguards, what they do, and why you should install them.

DaVinci Roof with Rocky Mountain SnowguardsSnowguards are a useful, and often necessary, addition to your roof. When the snow showers taper and the sun shines once again on your roof, the snow that has accumulated on your rooftop begins to melt. Snowguards help prevent snow from sliding off your roof in large chunks (otherwise known as a roof avalanche) and causing damage to whatever it might land on below (landscaping, mailboxes, etc).

In yet another situation, snow melting during winter can leave an array of large icicles. This cone shaped ice brings with it another set of problems, including blocked gutters and broken structures. Properly insulating your attic and ensuring that adequate ventilation will also help snow melt more evenly and help prevent ice damming.

As a homeowner, you can ward off the problems that come from uneven snow melting with snow guards, proper roof ventilation and adequate insulation in your attic. Modern snow guards blend well with synthetic slate roof shingles, simulated shake roofing, and other many kinds of roofs.

And the result? Your roof retains its beauty, your landscaping avoids damage,  and you enjoy the snow without worry.

Following a year of housing market recovery, DaVinci Roofscapes expects to end 2013 with top line sales increases in the double digits over 2012. And, the company anticipates experiencing double digit growth again in 2014.

"Our product offering was ideally positioned to immediately take advantage of the improving marketplace conditions in 2013," says Ray Rosewall, president and CEO of DaVinci Roofscapes. "We launched our Bellaforté Shake product in June of 2012 to complement our previous Bellaforté Slate offering. That gave us a complete product family with an attractive price point positioned to compete with premium asphalt and metal roofing products in the improving economy.

"The marketplace fully embraced the Bellaforté line in 2013 with the shake product achieving quadruple the anticipated sales figures for the year. On a percentage of sales basis, the Bellaforté family of products will have the greatest increase for our company in 2013, and we expect that to continue in 2014."

"We expect sales for all of our product lines to grow in 2014," says Rosewall. "The Bellaforté family will continue to grow at a faster rate because the product's lower price point gives us access to a much larger market. There's also the factor that our polymer roofing products meet changing codes in specific geographic areas. Most importantly, homeowners enjoy the outstanding look and superior performance of our polymer products."
